Which type of substrate is better to use in your poor mans pod perlite, geolite, or hydroton?

Those materials aren't your substrate, they are your humidity source. I'd go with geolite, as it's less messy and easier to work with.

lava rock works well also for humidity, and its cheap. you can get a large bag from a place like home depot for a couple of dollars.

And lava rock, geolite, hydroton, grow rocks are all the same thing, expanded clay, just different brands.

geolite and hydroton are the same, but lava rock is something else. As far as I know...

i LIKE perlite, it's just messy. it's reusable just like those other substances... you just lose a bit of it to the fact it gets kind of dusty and crushed easily.
i had a dream last night that i found some geolite for $.67 for a 10 lb. bag last night. god, you guys are starting to get into my dreams now.

Your right, my fingers got ahead of my brain, but it's related, kinda.
"This man-made product is often called grow rocks and is an extremely good growing medium. It is made by baking clay in a kiln. The inside of the clay pellets is full of tiny air pockets (much like lava rock) which makes this a light weight medium (some of the pellets even float)."

I like these ones
they don't degrade like the blue ones and you can bend them into any container like a 2 litre bottle or 5 gallon bucket or whatever

Ah perlite will do fine as well I suppose but more messy. Might fit well between the pieces of WBS and straw everywhere...

I hate perlite, its messy, sticks to everything when wet, clogged my bubble wands, and the dust from it isn't exactly healthy
