what do you have against Situationists?

false. that's like saying music sucks. you can't generalize against an entire genre of music.

did I say I was against the situationists...? re-read my post with comprehension in mind.

I think you can judge genres of music.
I think boyband music and cockrock are pretty lame, do you not agree?
I think as much thought and creativity goes into these forms of music as they go into metal/nu-metal/whatever - different trend, different fashion, different attitude - but same old lack of creativity and lack of experimentation.

sorry, I didn't go to sleep last night and misread your post about The Spectacle. so, cheers, for knowing Guy Debord/Ren? Vienet etc. I have these films and can send to you via my FTP if you want:

(SI).Guy.Debord.-.Refutation.of.All.the.Judgments,.Pro.or.Con,.Thus.Far.Rendered.on.the.Film..The.Society.of.the.Spectacle.(1975).mpg
(SI)Rene_Vienet_-_La_Dialectique_peut-elle_casser_des_briques_-_Can_Dialectic_Break_Bricks__(1973).avi
guy_debord_-_society_of_the_spectacle_(1973)_1.mpg
guy_debord_-_society_of_the_spectacle_(1973)_2.mpg

I had Vienet's Girls of Kamare but had to delete for space issues.

also, I tend to agree with you regarding boybands and cock rock but don't consider those real genres of music..merely shitty subgenres.

metal is a VAST genre of music with many different subgenres and creative/innovative people doing shit that's blurring genre lines (metal/jazz fusions metal/avantgarde/minimalist/drone/etc. fusions) and creating something really unique. I won't be a prick if you don't like any metal you've heard because some people just don't like the abrasiveness of it. I hate about 95% of metal now but recognize that there is (at least) 5% of artists doing really amazing shit so I can't say I hate all metal because it's aggressive, jock/redneck metal a la Pantera. that's like people saying metal sucks after hearing koRn or Linkin Park or Pantera. yeah. anyway. you have your opinion, but I probably wouldn't have said anything if you had said "all the metal I've heard".

edit: I also have http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069369 which you may enjoy. it's French and silly and somewhat political at least via its symbolism and main message. read other user comments than the first one that is displayed at the bottom.

what we all need is some good new drugs. or at least some good quality old ones. E's acid aint what they used to be. 60's 90's would not have been the same without. everyone on the same vibe will bring some reckoning to the music we hear. at the moment, yep, its the 80's all over again; a crash and burn from the minor peak of the 90's. once we are ALL on the same level drugwise thats when you will see a turn..

Why would you care if people knew you didn't listen to popular tripe? I can say I'm proud that I don't like Britney Spears, Staind, Hoobastank, New Found Glory, Yellowcard, Christina Aqhfdslilsahds, Jessica Simpson, Ashlee Simpson, Linkin Park, Puddle of Mud, Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, Sum41, Disturbed etc.

The point is that popular music now sucks, so you're going to have to search out music that hasn't been created in the mind of a corporate executive.

Phumfeinz is gonna feel silly when he comes out of his Beatles phase.

I know a guy like him, wears Beatles shit all the time and that's all he listens to like he's the only one to discover the Beatles.

I burnt out on those guys 18 yrs ago.

The Beatles "white album" is one of the first ones I tripped on acid on...it fit the trip well, it was intence!....ever since then I really liked the later Beatle albums even better...

Yeah I was tripping to that and Revolution 1 came on when I was lying in bed. It's almost like a lullaby. Such a nice relaxing song.

Who were those dumb fucks who thought they were the next beatles and ended up going up in flames after like one album? Some british dudes who kept saying we're bigger than the beatles and then where the fuck were they? Dead. Anyhow, beatles will always be amoung the coolest.

OK, from the 80s, Tom Petty was pretty cool.

I remember in the 80's, listening to the radio and thinking:
"If this is what music is, then music really sucks."

Back then it was all hair metal and trashy euro-pop. I remember turning on the radio and hearing whack shit like Duran duran, Depeche Mode, INXS, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Ratt, Poison, etc...

Then in like 1992, I was like 12 or 13, and some kid brought Pearl Jam's first CD to school and I thought it was kind of OK.

Then all the sudden all this badass music came out of nowhere: Red Hot chili Peppers, Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Sublime, Candlebox, Offspring, Tool, Blind Melon, and of course Nirvana hit it really big.

Even hip hop was better back then. It went from whack 80's shit like Will smith and the Fat boys to Biggie, Tupac, Cube, Dre, and Snoop.

For a single shining moment it seemed like my taste and the world's taste was in synch. All this tight music was on the radio and everyone liked it. Compared to the 80's, the 90's were a breath of fresh air!

I feel sorry for the 13 year old kid these days. It seems that music has reverted back to its 1980's state of general overproduced undertalented crappiness.

WTF happened?

I completely agree with you doctorj music has turned to complete shit about the only thing I listen to are the ones you listed above glad to see we both have similiar taste <3

It's really depressing to me to see how horrible music is now adays everything seems like its just a shitty-remake or shit music we've all heard before but now it's even worse bordering on emo-punk-preps which seems like everyone is now adays just makes me sick to my stomach. WTF IS WRONG WITH THIS WORLD? IF YOU CANT MAKE MUSIC DONT MAKE IT.

yes the Beatles is definately one of the few bands I can agree on with both of my parents...but they are from the LDS church though and very religous.. but they grew up at the time they were on top of the world...in fact I think that is where they got the name of my older brother from..."Paul" from the beatles...triippy eh?

I'm drunk and this thread is bringing back dormant memories. If only I had a time machine. Damn. There was so much good music being made at the start of the decade. I grew up in Seattle and remember back in 92 around the time of Pearl Jam's free concert at the stadium, suddenly I'd turn on the TV and see all of the local bands. AIC, PJ, Nirvana, Soundgarden, SeBaDoH, Folk Implosion, TAD.. all of the bands my friends and I would see every weekend became completely overexposed. It wasn't until the year that Sunny Day broke up that the scene really disintegrated but it was hard to give up our flannels. sigh.

There is still fantastic music being made but bands nowadays share few common threads. The music on MTV and mainstream radio is completely phony, it's sad.
