my buddy has a serotonin defficiency and is on serotonin pills for mood or something... we eats shrooms occasionally, would a serotonin defficiency give him a different trip than me?

Depends on what's causing the deficiency. What type of pills is he taking?

Well if it's a deficiency, then most likely he's getting supplemental serotonin either as 5-HTP or L-Tryptophan. This is just speculation, however. But as I understand it, it could either cause a much more powerful trip, or a much weaker trip. If he takes serotonin on the day he trips, theoretically it would make sense that he would trip less, since I believe serotonin would be the more powerful of the two in competition for the 5-HT1 and 5-HT2 receptors.

Yeah, I don't know enough to tell what exactly would happen, but I definately believe that if his serotonin system is "abnormal" trips would be effected.

That's a Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. Psilocybin works by blocking the release of serotonin from certain neurons in the brain. SO, you have a decrease in serotonin being released, and you have reuptake being inhibited. He'll probably still get off, but not as heavily.

yeah, and by the way, if he's depressed, psilocybin may increase his depression by keeping the happy stuff (serotonin) out of his system. buyer beware.

It's possible, but as far as I know that has yet to be proven or even tested. Most likely, I would think, it would just be temporarily displaced, but I'm not an expert.

I'm not an expert either. Just seems logical though. Not that it would be a permanent thing, but a depressed person tripping probably isn't a good thing anyway absent some good controls being in place.

Very true...it is good advice to discontinue any and all medication for at least two weeks or so prior to a psychedelic trip.

Unless of course you're insulin dependent. I think that would be somewhat of a bad thing.

Well depends...if by 'those serotonin pills' you are referring to Venlafaxine, and on how large each pill was. You probably won't OD on it, but it wouldn't be good. You would probably be very sleepy. If it was a large enough dose, then there is an increased risk for things like convulsions, seizures, coma, vertigo, etc. If you just wanna get high off it...don't...there are better things.
