What is Music?: Solving a Scientific Mystery by Philip Dorrell
free ebook - http://whatismusic.info/
The main idea of the theory is that music is a super-stimulus for the perception of musicality, where "musicality" is actually a perceived property of speech. "Musicality" refers to the property of music that determines how "good" it is, how strong an emotional effect it has, and how much we enjoy listening to it.

The theory implies that ordinary speech also has this property, in a manner which may vary as a person speaks. The musicality of speech is much more subtle than that of music, but it provides important information which the listener's brain processes (without conscious awareness of the processing), in order to derive some information about the internal mental state of the speaker. This information is applied to modulate the listener's emotional response to speech, and this accounts for the emotional effect of music.

What distinguishes the super-stimulus theory from all other serious attempts to explain music scientifically is that it starts from a simple assumption that music perception must be an information processing function, and this assumption results in quite specific explanations of how major aspects of music such as scales, regular beat and harmony are processed in the brain. It is the first theory to explain the perception of musical scales without a priori assuming the existence of musical scales. (The theory has to do this, because it is a theory of music perception as an aspect of speech perception, and musical scales do not occur in normal speech.)

Idea: Wouldn't it be better for everyone to PM they're links to you, so you can add them to your first post? Otherwise this could be a huge thread filled with links, which would make it rather chaotic.

That's very interesting, any other sites to go along with that subject? I would do a search, but I am too distracted and always stray from my goal. Thanx

Discogs.com

This is an excellent music database for electronic/rap music; theres also other kinds of music there as well. Users submit albums in to the database, and users also rate and add commentary on albums and releases.

I would also say Pitchforkmedia as this site offers reviews on new music. They also have pretty good 100 greatest albums lists from the 00's, 90's, 80's and the 70's.
Fairly pretentious reviews though

this is the only music site you guys need...http://www.kexp.org/home.asp?noflash=true

KEXP is a local Seattle radiostation (and the BEST radiostation in the world) ,which features special weekly programs for nearly every genre of music...their dj's have an infinite amount of music knowledge and you rarely see and hear them play the same songs over again (ahem like 99% of shite stations today). Its broadcasted world-wide and you can tune into the show via their site.

You'll learn about alot of diverse, old, and new music when tuning in. These people care so much about music, that i signed up for the volunteer pledge drive (get to meet all the dj's and eat fine food, whythefuck not!)

Peace.

Here's a keeper

http://kexp.org/home.asp?noflash=false

kexp is by far the best and most diverse music station out there. forget BBC, WFMU...whatever...KEXP, a freeform public fm radiostation based in Seattle, delivers the most expansive and unique music in the world.

They have special-genre programs weekly. If youre into electronica music for example, every Wednesday night you can hear their 3-hour electronic show called "Expansions". This particular program is spun and mixed live by 3 rotating host dj's (all three of them are very very fucking good, and each spins different styles of electronic beats)

Anyways, there's a weekly 3-hour program for virtually any genre you can think of. Many great indie artists and bands perform live sets at the station too. In fact its fair to say that kexp is the most loved fm station by most of the bands and artists themselves.

I really hope at least a few of you guys check their site out. it's absolutely worth it! even if youre a music afficionado, i promise you will STILL discover plenty of great music you've never heard before when tuning into kexp.

{Peace}
