Germinating catha edulis seeds
    #3474693 - 12/10/04 02:34 AM (19 years, 4 months ago)

Hey, anybody have luck with these? I got 30 seeds from BA. I planted 15 of em. Used Home Depot cactus mix in jiffy pots. I water and allow to dry then water again, following instructions I found on line. But it's been two weeks now. No go. What's the deal?!

Has anybody here successfully germinated these things? If so, how did you do it?

Gratefully,

tweaker

Mine always sprout within a couple weeks usually. Some should come up in less than a week. Be sure to plant them not too deep and keep the soil moist. I use plastic wrap over the top.

Yeah, not too moist..i treat them like cactus seedlings, and keep them close to the surface too. Put a lid over the top to keep in some moisture, keeping the soil moist but not damp or too wet is good. Dryin out inbetween can keep things slow going.

Not too moist until they come up but until then they have to be kept moist. I should have made that distinction. If a few have sprouted and the rest haven't, you can leave them moist even under the plastic for a few days. That's why yo don't want too many seeds in one pot. As with all plants, let the soil dry out some after they come up but don't let them wilt.

Cool. Thanks everybody. I've taken your suggestions and spritzed em and covered with plastic wrap. Hopefully this will get them sprouted. Thanks for your responses. I'll let you know if it works.

Peace,

flouros and/or a south facing window would be good for over wintering.
they like lots of sun however, so if you're planning on keeping her indoors go with a HID lamp.
also, regular potting soil is fine.

Hey whats going on, I know this looks bad to start off, because Whenever there was a newbie making a post from OG I gave them little respect, especially when they were asking something from me, I hope you are different then me LOL I am wdcf2 from Overgrow.com and anyway my playground got shut down. There is now a new plant I am trying to get, Khat, and Have had two bad experiences already with trying seeds from Bouncingbear, anwyways I was wondering if I could buy a couple Khat clones off someone?
Thanks.
God bless

Thats a controled plant and trading of such things are probably prohibited.

So, Catha Edulis seeds have germination inhibitors on the seed coat which must be thoroughly cleaned off.  I recommend rinsing the seeds very well in hot tap water, then soak in hydrogen peroxide for several minutes to an hr, and then rinse again with hot running water for a few minutes.  This usually does the trick.  After the treatment they should be pressed into the surface of a very loose well draining soil mix.  60/65% perlite/soil. Keep in humidity domes to keep in moisture but not too much.  Keep in indirect bright light and keep warm.
