I have different media players on my machine, but I see nobody has mentioned Apollo yet. I respect it very much for its simple design, petite bytesize and outstanding mp3 decoding quality. Clicky "Sound quality is not skinnable" as they say

*decoding
Apollo sure sounds better than Winamp or WMP, at least on my system And it takes just a little more than 1MB of my hard disk space
As for opensource compression formats, see Apollo plug-ins
The format of visualization, digital signal processing (DSP) and general purpose plug-ins is perfectly compatible with corresponding Winamp plug-ins. Thus you can get these plug-ins from Winamp plug-ins page, for instance.

ah, misread your post. nevermind then
yeah, I bet there are players that sound better than others - never tested the differences though.
I like foobar & winamp & xmms.

I use Windows Media Player but I am always looking for something better. Nothing seems to be worth the effort of re-labeling MANY MANY songs. WMP plays everything, the graphics suck and it runs pretty slow...
Meh, once someone MAKES a GREAT Media Player, I will switch. Until then, WMP ain't bad at all. Just lousy visualizations.
Use winamp for parties. Milkdrop + Party = FUN!

what do you mean by having to re-label tracks because of switching media players? If you have proper ID3v1.1 or ID3v2.x tags, you'd be fine with any player.

Yes, I'm confused as well. I'm also quite sure that Winamp can play many more file types than WMP can.

I mean, all my songs are titled and organized the way I like tham in WMP, while most of the lables transfer perfectly to other players... there are enough discrepencies to require going though tens of thousands of songs to make sure they all are labled correctly. This takes FOREVER. Downloaded mp3's have had this labeling issue most often it seems.
I haven't tried to switch the players lately (in the last 10-12 months), perhaps I will see what else is out there.
Let me clear this up another way for Bio. Microsoft is like money, sometimes it is a necissary evil. I stayed with Internet Explorer for years (until I found FireFox) because it was the best, not because I liked it. WMP is similar, it sux in many ways, but it is solid and it runs well with other windows programs, and media formats, like Microsoft programs often do. I'd love to switch players, but I've yet to see anything that's free, that is as easy to use, or anything that plays as many audio and video formats w/o compatibility issues on my comp as WMP. Plus, MANY internet links use WMP for streaming, and I like that WAY better than Real player or Quick time.
Get what I'm saying?

^^^^^^^^ I agree, although I no longer use WMP (I use itunes), I wouldn't want it not to be there. It is solid, quick to load and like you say many links run with it.
I also had the trouble of having my music organized in wmp and wanting to change. It delayed me for a long time because of the effort involved. I did it in the end and now it is great, much much faster searching etc.
Creative Music centre impressed me quite a lot, i used it briefly but again had the song info problem. It was good though, came with my extidgy soundcard. It comes with a remote and has a large font interface so you could see it from the other side of a room. Good controls on the remote, picking music, by any field, opening and closing programs etc.

hmm - I still dont understand stand what errors/problems in files' ID3v1.1 or ID3v2.x tags have to do with a specific player. If they are problematic, then they are problematic with all players. If a player uses some other kind of tagging (weirdo proprietary tags), then fuck that - it's all about standards.

Like IE, I have never enjoyed or even liked using WMP. It might have its merits but it certainly doesnt compete with foobar, winamp, or even itunes. In fact, there are more built in options, extensions, and plugins available with the other players. Like IE, I think WMP is bloated, not very customizable, insecure, poor user interface, and lacking many options that should be standard. Sure, it loads fast like IE - but that's because your runnning Windows and its essential services are already running in the background. Like moving from IE to Firefox, once you switch over to one of the alternatives you'll wonder what took you so long.
Why do you think IE is the best? Other than fast loading times, I cannot see why that crap browser deserves your respect.
As for format compatibility, I think WMP supports far less than winamp or foobar. Not sure about itunes. Even earlier releases of WMP played more formats than the current version.
Let's not even get into the .wma format - what about a shit those audio files are.

I use winamp, because the skins kick ass, and it runs Milkdrop, which is one of the most awesome visuals program I've come across. The only downside to winamp is the disk space it takes up.
