How can I drill holes in plexi glass?

I've been trying to cut a hole in plexi glass to insert a hose. The glass just cracks everytime I start drilling it... -What should be done to cut this stuff?

Maybe some masking or duct tape down on the glass would help to prevent cracking. I would also go get a new titanium bit too, fairly inexpensive at the wallmart or autozone. And yes turn your drill speed down way down. Also don't apply to much pressure on the drill as you drill. The tape should keep the bit from sliding all over the place as the hole is started. Take agar's advice and make sure it is done on a solid surface too. GL

A good sharp bit , and do not bear down full force , let the bit start to cut into the plexi , then put full presure to fifnish cut . Most if not all hardware stores\Home Depot\Lowes will cut it to size if you ask them , mkae sure you have dimensions correct though .
PS when you get sick of that plexi lid warping , go LEXAN you'l will be much happier .

the best thing I have ever found for drilling into acrylics and plastics brad point drill bits, the center point gives you a pilot to follow, the extended cutting edges will score the plastic giving it no where to begin a fracture, back the plastic with a piece of wood and once the point starts to penetrate, turn the plastic over and start from the other side
do not allow them to go all the way through from the first drilling side and use a slow speed roughly 300rpms

it might help to soak it in the hottest water you can get in your bathtub for about 15 mins, then start drilling.

Also, start with the smallest bit you have. Then, keep going over the whole with larger and larger bits until you've got it the size you want. And let me remind you one more time to go SLOW.

I like those bits pris#1 I bet those would do the trick. Self starting would work the best.

they have always worked for me and a set at home depot is only about $14
the singles are from about $2 to $12 depending on the size
remember, brad point drill bit.

This also depends on the size of the hole he is cutting. If attaching something like a garden hose you would be better off using a saw blade after drilling a small pilot hole, or even just a bunch of small holes to form a circle of the correct size. With most plastics heat works best to avoid cracking, like a hot knife on the clear hard plastic of a rubbermaid tub, but with plexi glass you should avoid heat. Heat like that caused by the friction of a high speed drill bit will cause it to bind, then when you try to force through that binding it will crack. That is why it is normally scored and snapped. Drilling or even a jigsaw can be used on it as long as it is not moving at a high rate of speed and you take breaks so heat is not built up.

for larger holes a forstner bit is suitable, again at a low speed to prevent
the plastic thats being cut away from melting and binding the bit
a little oil will do even more. also keep in mind that certain
plastics dont do well with heat, others are designed for high
heat and impact resistance... one example is polymethylpentene
also called lexan.

I use a UniBit at work all the time. works real good on acrylic. Is acrylic the same as lexan? I think it is.

Unibit or Plastidrill, which is made for plastic. They just take a grinder and grind the outside edge of each of the two cutting planes. It is these corners that cause the plastic to crack. If the corner is filed down it won't crack, that is why Unibits work......MM
