ROME (AFP) - An elderly Italian-American restaurateur paid a record 41,000 dollars (31,600 euros) for a large white truffle at a charity auction of the delicacies near Turin, the organisers said.

Max Giambelli, 89, fended off bids from a young Russian following the auction by satellite link-up from Moscow to nab the truffle weighing over one kilogramme (2.2 pounds).
Giambelli was among bidders located at a New York hotel as 15 expensive truffles went under the hammer at the medieval Grinzane Cavour castle, set in the heart of Piedmont truffle country outside the northern city of Turin.
The white truffle from Piedmont is the most sought-after in Italy, and each year local tubers are exported around the world.
Giambelli may have paid the highest price ever for a truffle at the annual auction here, but it by no means the largest. According to locals, that honour goes to a monster weighing 2,520 grammes uncovered in 1954 and later presented to then US President Dwight Eisenhower.
The auction proceeds will go to a cancer research institute in Turin, as well as to charities in New York and Moscow

I doubt it... they need a symbiotic relationship with a specific species of tree in order to grow...
A fellow I met at a rainbow gathering claimed he had grown amanitas indoors by putting a bonzai tree in his terrarium, so I guess anything's possible...

IIRC truffles live in symbiosis with specific trees. Up until five years ago, nobody had succeeded in growing them outdoors. So indoors growing is out. Which explains partly why truffles are so extremely expensive.
