people are always asking what the signs of acitve mushrooms are, blueing, etc. It would be very helpful if someone could please tell me what, are the signs of a mushroom that is poisonous. Would this include white gills, or a brown spore print. Do any such universal characteristics exist that will let me know that it may be deadly?

Not really, poisonous mushrooms come in all shapes, sizes and colors. The only sure way would be to identify it down to species. The edibility status of many are still unknown. It would be a good idea to become familar with some of the known deadly species or genera that contain several known toxic species.

eris has it.
The only universal characteristic of a poisonous mushroom is that it makes people sick. For obvious reasons, eating mushrooms to find out if they're poisonous is not a very good idea.
Most mushrooms are unknown. Most of them nobody cares. It's not important if a mushroom 1 millimeter tall is edible or poisonous, and there are a *lot* of tiny mushrooms.
There are also a lot of mushrooms that are larger that are unknown because they are very difficult to identify accurately. Somebody has probably eaten them, but we have no good way to be sure exactly what was eaten.
Fortunately the list of deadly mushrooms is fairly short. Anybody who picks and eats wild mushrooms should at least know all the deadly species that might grow in their area, so they can be sure that what they're about to eat isn't one of the deadly ones.
Happy mushrooming!
