Or do you know somebody who has experienced combat?
Is it a positive experience? I am not implying that killing people is something to look forward to, but I am wondering if that kind of struggle and suffering builds character and makes a person appreciate life more.
Or is it a negative experience that scars one for life and that you would never want to experience again?

I know a lot of people that have seen combat, new and old.
My uncle talks of it as the darkest part of his life and wishes he could get it to stop playing in his mind. It's something that is impossible to forget, hearing the screams of a man as napalm is melting the flesh from his still living body. That I definately don't see as an uplifting feeling.
My friends who were in Iraq, one of which was in a stand off for over 24 hours witnessed two of his buddies killed, one shot right in the face. His squad had to kill I believe 8 opposing soldiers and lost 2 of their own while doing so. This is nothing compared to my uncle's experience, but my friend said that he was basically in a zombied state after the entire battle had finished and he was sitting at his bunker.
According to both of them:
You don't understand how hard it is to be talking to a friend one minute and the next leaving his lifeless body in the path of fire to save your ass and kill another human being.
You will remember their screams for help for the rest of your life.
You will be killing for reasons other than your own freedom.
How great does it sound to you? - Silven

The white man can never win another war on the ground. His days of war, victory, his reign -- his days of ground victory are over. Can I prove it? Yes. Take all the action that's going on this earth right now that he's involved in -- tell me where he's winning. Nowhere.
Why some rice farmers -- some rice eaters ran him out of Korea. Yes, they ran him out of Korea. Rice eaters with nothing but gym shoes, and a rifle, and a bowl of rice took him and his tanks and his napalm, and all that other action he's supposed to have and ran him across the Yalu. Why? 'Cause the day that he can win on the ground has passed.
