Memorial Music (Whats allowed in general?)

Is it custom to usually just play sad music, or soft music at a memorial. Im just talking on average, not anyones personal preference.
Cuz I wanted to play some Rod Stewart at my Dads memorial because he loved him. My sister says: "I dont think thats apropriate...". And then goes on saying: "Well, I have some soft Tom Petty"....He liked him too, and I was going to find something soft by Rod Stewart! Like a softer version of Maggie Mae or something.
Anyways, I dont think she should be using her own personal preference, and should listen to what others remember him by, and Rod Stewart is what makes me remember him. Of course I wont play some party style Rod Stewart in the Church, but something apropriate. I was just bothered that my Sister says no to me, then goes off about what is suppose to be played, including Tom Petty, which is basicly the same as Rod Stewart....kind of hypocritical hey? What do u think, what would you do....what would u seriously do? And is it custom to play sad music on average? Or can I play something that just brings me closest to him, even if its its a nice song like Maggie Mae? O4 would that be awkward? I havent been to a memorial b4.

Bridge Over Troubled Water will be played when i die.
also "Lord Abortion" by Cradle of Filth and "Scumfuck Tradition" by GG Allin...
try to pick something that has some application to the person's life, or religious beliefs, and shows some respect, anything fast and loud would prob not be the best at a memorial, a wake is a different story...

It all really depends on the memorial, but there is a song that reminds you of him then play it. Tell you sister she can do the same but there is a song that you want played, or better yet, just tell the person incharge of the music that it's a really special song and they'll play it. The people at memorials kiss the surviving childerns asses. When my dad died I prolly could've done anything I wanted and it would've been cool. Good luck man, and my condolences.

I suppose it is customary to play sad music, but fuck that. I always liked the idea of celebrating one's life, rather than mourning their death. What do you think your father would have wanted? I wouldn't turn it into a party atmosphere, but I see nothing wrong with some tastefully chosen Rod Stewart.

I really think that something by Penderecki would be appropriate.

Yeah it's usually customary, but at my friend memorial we played a bunch of greenday and some Blink.

During the actual church service it is considered inappropriate to play any kind of secular music (depending on how strictly religious your church is, I'm saying this based on Lutherans, just for your reference). Church services are for hymns and maybe some classical music (Beethoven and Bach type stuff is usually allowed). Normally there is a reception after the church service and there might be sammiches and cookies or a whole meal, and that is where you can dedicate songs to the deceased person, because he would have liked them.
I've helped with many memorial services at my chuch, and this is what would be appropriate. Church songs aren't usually sad, they are usually uplifting hymns. At the reception, get everyone's attention at the beginning and do a little speech explaining that he loved these songs/artists, and that is why you're now going to play the music.
Sorry to hear about your loss
