Is white fuzz contamination?
    #3237832 - 10/09/04 11:18 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

It's a few days after they have been taken out of the jars (and they smelled very mushroomy when that happened) and the cakes are now covered with an 1/8th or 1/4 inch layer of fluffy white stuff. It looks a lot like cotton. This is my first time, so I don't know what to expect and I am fearing that this is not mushroom material but in fact some evil fungus set out to thwart me. Either that or I was dumb and they are contaminated. They are P Ecuador if that matters.

Thanks

Is there any chance you could get a picture for us? It would help a lot. I'm only a newb so I cant really help you. From what I've read, if it's growing really quickly then its most likely a contamination. If it is growing fast, and is how you described then I'd assume it was cobweb mould. But it's never right to assume anything so try and get us a pic.

Good Luck

Without a pic, it's hard. But you should look at the contamination section and see some cobwebs. It's gray and streaky. Gray and white are a bit hard to tell apart, but if it's snowy white like the rest of your mycelium, you are probably okay. But I suggest you post a pic. Hyphae and Magash have the best eyes on this forum, IMO. They can break it down to sub-pixel levels, I think.

It is definitely white and not grey and from looking at the pictures, I still do not know.

I will try to get a camera, but I cannot just ask anyone, so I am not sure whether I will suceed

I lost 1 jar from contamination, but that was dark grey and very obviously not mushrooms. If these product shrooms will they be safe to eat or do I really need to figure this out? (I'm guessing the latter)

If its white then you do know. It's myc. They'll be fine. Cakes will grow lots of rhizmorphs and areial mycelium before fruiting.

As far as I know, no one has ever accidentally fruited a poisonous mushroom while attempting to produce a consumable one.

It is possible I suppose, but extremely unlikely.

Even if it were to happen, the likelyhood that it would bear a close resembleance to the mushroom you were trying to grow, and fruit on the same substrate, are astronomical.

White fuzz on a cake is normal, especially after a dunk cakes are known to fuzz up. White Fuzz on the base of mushrooms is an indication of high humidity and is no big deal.

Here is a pic of a cake that is heavily fuzzed yet fruiting great. You can see one is so fuzzed that is begin to blue on the entire outside. Once you dunk a really fuzzed cake somtimes it become matted down and wierd blue in areas but should always regrow some new fuzz after a dunk and fruit again.
