Tub in tub.
    #2921939 - 07/23/04 07:42 PM (4 years, 5 months ago)

Incubator set up.

1. First thing get your bottom tub and put in your heater. I also add a water pump to mix the water that way it heats up much more evenly but it isn?t a necessary item. I got the tape from a boat shop and it has been working for some time. Good stuff for underwater.

2. Next put something (I used tall half pints) in each corner of the tub. This will keep the heater and pump safe from being smashed if I put in to many jars or do something stupid.

3. Now be sure to set the heater before you put on the top tub. I attach the top tub with zip ties cause the top tub will want to float.

4. Add the water. I like to add as much water as I can before it starts to spill out.

5. If you use the heaters with the external controls set them now to get ready for the jars. Mine use a dial and a sensor that gives the temp inside the chamber rather then the water. It also has a metal bulb rather then a glass one.

6. Finished

i like to add a towel to the bottom so the heat from the heater isn't so strong and direct on the lower jars...
nice thread.

Nice Job Magash!
A lot of newbs out there will really appreciate the detailed info on exaclty how to set one of these babies up!

The digital temp control on the outside is a nice touch.
Even though you have done it before you might as well go ahead and slap those links on here for where to get those heaters cause you know everyone is going to ask when they read this post!

Killer Setup!!

The water pump handles that for me.

that water pump is a great idea...one that i've been wanting to use. but in the smaller tubs i used to use, a pump wouldn't fit. guess it's time to upgrade ; )

i got mine setup finally. the jars and the water pump are great ideas. i noticed without a pump the temp fluctuates fairly often at about 1-2 degrees F. also, i think the zips are only needed with larger tubs due to the amount of water needed to fill it. i am using a medium sized tub and the weight of my jars seems to be enough to keep the tub submerged. i noticed that you need to add more water about every 3-4 days due to evaporation. props to magash! this is the best incubator design i have ever seen!

Well I got my heater at wallys.......and I was having the 'flotation' issues so i just put a box of books on top.......I dont have external thermos so i needed access to the heater. I like the zip tie method, and as soon as my temp gets stabalized I may zipper down. The book box is heavy.

The heater i picked up has suction cups on it! so no need for tape.

And if you check out all the tubs, you can find them that when they stack there will always be a 2-3 inch space in between the bottoms, so no need for glass spacers.

Do you cover them with blankets?

Tub in tub is the coolest , or warmest, depending on your needs.
My heater hasn't run much this summer But last winter it turned weeks into days for germination.

And yes do cover them in blankets :goodluck:

Ok, so what is the "Optimum" temp?

I have read so many teks, and they all seem to differ slightly here. I see that one of yours is at 80, and one at 77. I can safely assume that temp alters incubation. I was shooting for 82 because it seemed to be right in the middle of all the suggestions.

peace

82 is fine, you have to remember that the jars will be at least 1 degree warmer than the air (you are measuring air temp, aren't you?)

Actually when the pic was taken you can see the green light in the pic under the number. That shows that the heater was on and was still heating up. I set them for 84F

It's more important to have a fan in the bin and a rack then gaving the water pump. Convection will take care of the water temps but you need a fan to even the temps in the bin. I made a rack with some heavy guage screen and put shot glasses under the center for support. A 80mm fan with a 6v power supply gets the job done.

I need to make my incubator for mycobags now so im making a whole new rack setup, its going to be a bottom rack with a cage around it and a fan on the outside so i just fill the center bin with bags then put a piece of foamboard then another layer of 6 bags.

sounds like an interesting setup for bags. you'll have to post some picks when you get it complete.

I'll be making it this week. I have to keep in mind the growth makes it's own heat and the center of 12 mycobags might get hot, so im going to space em out a bit or have dividers or vent tubes.

here is some helpful info for everyone using this method!!.. IT ROCKS, but other than that lol...

DO NOT USE BLEACH IN YUR WATER IN THE BOTTOM TUB... my fishtank heater just exploded, because i put too much in, i put like half a cup in .... and now i have to buy a new heater, the wires were all discolored and the tube shattered, the shit went everywere, and i dunno if its gonna effect my colonization, cuz now i can only get the temps up to 77f ... just some info for u
