K guys, I just got my impulse sealer and now I'm ready to start making my shittake/reishi bags. I have a garbage bag full of maple shaving from a woodworking shop. I have a bunch of oak(a bit of mdf mixed in that) sawdust. Will this work for substrate? Gunna innoculate with a needle. I can also get more compost type of oak/maple chips. BUt would whut I have work for now. Like the shavings and sawdust? Whutelse should I add?
-------------------- Peace all.

Use your needle to inoculate grain, and spawn that into pure sawdust. That can and will fruit or you can use it as spawn into more bags that are sawdust/chips/bran.

In Stamets GGMM this recipe is recommended as a base substrate for woodloving species:
100 pounds sawdust 50 pound wood chips ( 1/2 - 4 inches ) 40 pounds oat, wheat or rice bran 5-7 pounds gypsum (calcium sulfate)
moisture 60-65 %
In the book it says that the gypsum does not affect PH very much, but stimulates mycelial growth.

k, thanks alot raga. Now question about moisture? Do you soak? Or just add the 60-65%water to the mix and stir? Calcium sulfate, can you get it a the grocery store? I'm doing phoneing right now to track it down. But just thought I would ask.

Gypsum is used to loosen soil, to get rid of clumps. Guarentee you'll find it at landscaping, nursuries, or hardware stores.

I have never really used exactly this recipe cause I almost only use wood fuel pellets. Usually I just soak them overnight and then let them drain for several hours. When I use chipped wood pieces I just soak them over night, boil them and again let them drain for several ours. They say that the moisture content is correct when only a few drops of water get out of the substrate when you squeeze it hard. But I think you can get a better feeling for the moisture content by weighting the wet and the dry substrate ( put the wet substrate in the oven ) and calculate the difference. But I have to admit that I never have done that either.

I cant find wood fuel pellets anywhere within 100 miles around me. I'm contacting a lumber distributor that is a family friend, hopefully he will have sawdust for me. I bet he can get lots!

Several years ago I tried maple shavings from a wood planer and found them to dry out very quickly.

Yeah, werd mycobag. I tried that with cyans with no success. If i added maybe a bit of coir or just pane sawdust, would that balance it all out?
