as only some of the roads have been built without taxation.
Wild guess...but would those be the ones situated in places that are likely to return a profit?

Before government got into the road building business in the U.S. there were networks of roads (and canals) created privately.
Is this not an appeal to tradition in itself?!
I agree that governments do tend to try and expand their influence to far into everyday life and I also wish they were a little more accountable as it is obvious that they waste money in a criminal fashion. But at the same time I cant help thinking that in some areas of life we are better off with some centralised government who look after essential services such as policing, maintaining infrastructure, environmental health issues etc as these are areas I would not wish to see turned over to the private sector as I think they would do an even worse job than the government. Tolls make sense to me in certain places but I dont see how they can work in towns and cities. Having said that Londons congestion charge is proving fairly successful, but of course the money is going to the nasty government!

No, I was pointing out that road networks (and canals) were created without taxation.
