A strain is a particular specimen, while a race is particular population of the species, right? or maybe i don't know what i'm talking about. Anyway, what (genetically) sets apart all the diff races of psilocybe cubensis? If i gave you a thai race and told you it was a texas race, could you tell the difference, how?

You can identify mushrooms many ways, check out the FAQ. They all have special characteristics.

Species is Psilocybe cubensis Race/strain GT Strain/substrain/dikaryon is the individual specimen.
Race and strain are used interchangably, so are Strain and substrain.
I know it is confusing, but there is no general consensus here.
Each strain possesses different appearance on AGAR, and with the fruitbody.
Each strain may offer unique cultural pecularities as well, as in speed to pin from casing, or ability to pin with minimal air exchange, etc...
They are all Psilocybe cubensis or subcubensis.
A look at veroius vendor sites will show you visulaly the differences between STRAINS/RACES. Refrencing pictures from all sources will give you a better Idea of the difference between Strains/Substrains within a Single RACE/STRAIN. Not every GT growing from the same source looks the same based on Primarily cultural diferences, but also based on Artificial selection within a population. This can lead to multiple GT's arrising from a single GT.
If I start with one print of GT and Isolate several dikaryons. Grow each with different methods for many generations, I will end up with several GT's.
It is my opinion that a Vendor that carries Spores from a single source, will eventually have a similar version of all the different Strains. The longer time goes by, the more all there Strains will look alike. JUSt MY OPINION.

Side note.
I have yet to see any evidence offered up that proves that Each Strain is a RACE in the sense that they are no-longer capable of interbreeding.
In theory each an every Psilocybe cubensis STRAIN/RACE should interbreed with each other via monokaryon mating.
