 Cool weather Cubes.

Through selective breeding and cloning we are able to play GOD. Most people are culturing to produce bigger, prettier, more potent, more prolific mushrooms. Their is, who knows how many strains of Cubensis. All of them grown in about the same way. 80 degrees to incubate 70 or so to fruit. I want to grow towards a new strain that can survive and prosper at lower temps. I've all ready picked a name for it.
"THE ICE CUBE"
I am looking for strains that germinate, and colonize well at low temps.
If you have been able to produce after heater failure, or neglect tek at low temps. I want your prints.
This will be the last time I experiment with domesticated "active" mushrooms. I would like to try to produce a strain that could Introduced to the wild as far North as I am.
If you have done any work in this area, or know of anyone that has please contact me.

Itll be difficult to turn a hybrid of several domestic back into a wild strain.
good luck though.
Maybe you should define "cold" in absolutes so we have a baseline for defining tolerances
Ive had no prob fruiting at 19 - 21C which i thought was way too cold

Hi !
Last year at the begining of October...I have put some T3 mycelium in garden to improve vegetable growth. Temp was from 6 -12 Celsius grade - I could not belive but...  ...they were...a lot of small and Mean "cubbies"
Otherwise B+ ? it is the "coldest" cub... I think

Tasmainian strain sub cubenisis is the coolest and most southern grower in australia .

Erm, hi.
Does anyone more knowledgeable than myself have any opinions on the cold tolerance of cubes/particular strains of cubes?
I'm interested in the plausibility of an outdoor cube patch during the summer in zone 6a (USDA).

Cubes will grow fine outdoors in the summer all the way to Alaska. They just don't usually survive the winter outside their normal habitat. The picture below was an outdoor grow 50 miles south of the Canadian border.

I would like to add that the strain really doesn't matter either. The trick is to use multispore spawn when doing these outdoor grows. Whichever sub-strains are best suited to the environment you provide them will thrive and fruit.

Thanks, I was planning on making a few bags of spawn with random multispore syringes of different strains, and then spawning them using Moe's outdoor tek.
Horse farms ftw.
I'm going to separate the strains like a pie chart on the patch, so where they all meet I'll get some interesting crosses.
(this is a tentative plan for late May, I'm just doing the research now)

May is a perfect time to start an outdoor grow up here in the north. Last year I started mine soon after the apple blossoms fell. By the time fall had come. I recorded a total of seven flushes from a rather insignificant woodchip/sawdust pile. I'll admit that the seventh flush really wasn't anything to crow about though. Too cold by then of course.
Next year I plan on supplementing the same basic mix with dry dogfood instead of manure. To keep out competitors I am mixing the dry dogfood with the spawn first. Then I'll mix that in to the bulk of the substrate. This way the mycelium has first dibs on the dogfood nuggets.
I'm going to journal next years outdoor grow.

there is a strain cursing around the net called "oh canada"...obviously a cubensis which survives colder temps.

I've called BS on that for years. All cubes will fruit in cool weather. The picture I posted above is Redboy strain, but I didn't mention it earlier because strain is irrelevant. Over the years, I've heard B+ is great for cold weather, GT is great for cold weather, etc. . .The fact is, cubensis wants to survive and will. The Redboys posted above were fruiting when the temps were in the 40's at night and low 50's during the day. However, the species as a whole will fruit in those conditions. I've had many outdoor grows in the far north over a wide range of 'strains'.

I would not put too much faith in CM and his cold weather P. cubensis strain.

i have found cubes in february here in south carolina. thats right frosty grass cold as shit in the morning with a litterally frozen cube next to it. look at some of my posts from 2005 and you'll see

I have been screwing around with this silly blue meanie cube substrain for two years, and finally realized the one I have likes to pin and fruit at temps btwn 55-60deg F....strange....thinking it might be a nice cool weather cube. Thought it would be a good room temp strain but even that is too hot for these babies. If anyone else had grown the blue meanie substrain I would be interested to know what parameters they succeeded at.

Thank you ROGER RABBIT!!! in the past 30 years they've found it to be fruit in even colder...40's pretty low...the temp was 60 they wouldn't fruit...but 40s....that just made me smile
I had a buddy who had a oyster monotub and put his in the freezer and forgot about it for a bit...it STILl colonized even in those freezing temps.....IM glad you brought this up

There must be strains that are more or less suited to colder temperatures. There are a lot of strains collected from different locations. You would think that the ones found at higher elevations and further north would be more suited to their colder environments than southern and coastal strains would be.

I'm guessing that the numbers posted have been measurments of the air temp. Probably taken a few feet off of the ground.
This brings up new questions, but back to my first one for now.
I should have asked: What are some of your lowest colinization temps?
Some new questions.
Anyone have stats on soil temps and fruiting?
Does the soil/air temp ratio have an effect on fruiting?

I left some pf jars in a cold garage during the winter, when the garage temps were in the 30's and 40's. It took about two months, but they colonized fully.

i really do not believe that "strain" even matters, they are all the same mushroom Psilocybe cubensis.
but if i believed that there was a difference, i would contact the Peaceful Nomad, now known as Peaceful Nomad II. he found cubensis growing in the month of November in northern Kansas, growing next to snow.
