hard to say who "came first" but the 1st generation generally developed in three cities between 1976-1978
in the uk: sex pistols, the clash, siouxie and the banshees, buzzcocks, etc.
in nyc: television, richard hell & the voidoids, talking heads, patti smith, etc.
in LA: germs, fear, catholic discipline, black randy and the metrosquad, bags, dils, weirdos, etc.

That was a good answer. Pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking. I've always largely seen it as an attitude that developed in NYC in the mid-seventies, with bands like the New York Dolls, Television, and the Ramones, and then migrated... Perhaps, one might even trace it's spiritual roots to the Velvet Underground, but that might be reaching a bit...

Thanks for the replies. I'm interested in getting punk records that predate the Ramones and the Sex Pistols...like the predecessors of later, more marketable punk, who never enjoyed much if any commercial success. Thanks.

Over the course of its three-decade history, punk has consistently taken rock and roll's inherent rebelliousness and politicism and made those qualities violent and explicit. Its most obvious roots lie in the aggressive, sometimes abrasive rhythms of '60s garage rock, the theatricality of glam rock, the ironic nihilism of New York's The Velvet Underground and The New York Dolls, and the raw, visceral power of Detroit proto-punk icons The Stooges and MC5.
Punk rock as a genre unto itself exploded in late '70s England when angry working class kids, frustrated with the rigid norms and class polarization that ruled their country, formed fast, loud, primitive rock bands with names like The Buzzcocks, The Damned, The Clash, and The Sex Pistols, through which they expressed their rage and alienation. Similarly minded bands emerged all over the U.S. -- The Ramones in New York, The Dead Kennedys in San Francisco, and X and Black Flag in Los Angeles. These bands had different aesthetics, different agendas, and different sounds, but they were all united by their rejection of institutional authority, their penchant for self-destruction, and their music's raw, wounded emotional power.
As you might expect of such a huge social phenomenon, punk has been endlessly co-opted by mainstream culture. But as long as smart kids with challenging things to say can get their hands on noise-making devices, punk rock will endure.
Comon now people get with it. And by the way my favorite punk band is "Bad Brains"

A friend of mine used to listen to Bad Brains a lot. While I remember them being good, I can't remember a specific album. What would you recommend as a reintroduction? Thanks.

Seriously though, it's impossible to say who the first punk group was. Many say The Stooges, The MC5 or The New York Dolls though.

see...the velvet underground, the stooges, MC5, NYdolls, bowie...were not "punk" - they were the roots of punk. That's like saying the 1st reggae bands were dancehall or traditional ska.

The album "Black Dots" is very good as well as their self titles one. Ad for songs i like "Sailin' on" and "How low can a punk get?"

yeh everyone who said mc5, NY dolls and richard hell/voidoids is right
all that influenced ramones, plus some 70's bubblegum shit
ramones influenced punk sensibilities and went to the uk
first ramones uk show saw the formation of the clash, the sex pistols, the jam, etc. etc.
bad brains are awesome "i against i" is essential punk and anyone who claims to like punk should own it. but they don't. i'll bet they all have "dude ranch" by blink 182 though

i spent years in the punk scene till i got sick of the fuckin hypocrisy.

What i'm saying is that the first man to play the guitar established what it meant to play the guitar. Therefore, the second guy to ever play the guitar, played it his own way, in effect inventing punk rock.
