Peyote flowering under artificial light
    #2316879 - 02/09/04 05:35 AM (20 years, 1 month ago)

What conditions are required in order for peyote to flower under artificial light? Does it follow a long-day/short-day formula, or what?

I've read that some cacti flower after going out of dormancy. How short does the "day" need to be to trigger dormancy in peyote? If waking from dormancy is a flowering trigger, how long does the preceding dormancy period need to be?

I have a similar question, will a low watt fluorescent grow light bulb work, or is a metal halide light needed to grow peyote and san pedro?

I guess my asumption is fluorescent will keep them alive, but not much more...

Voodoo, do you bother with the dormancy deal, or do you leave it on 12/12 all the time?

DieCommie, I grow peyote and pedro under cheap fluorescent shoplites. The setup is only 5 watts (400 lumens) per square foot, which by any standard is pretty low. The peyotes seem to do OK, although I haven't compared notes with anyone with a decent lighting setup. The one year olds are about 15mm in diameter, and the 1.5 year olds average 18 or so.
The pedros, on the other hand, are waay skinnier than any I've seen grown under natural light. They are 1.5 years old, and average 1.5cm diameter by 10 cm.
What I should have done a long time ago is added more lights and moved the plants closer to them. Unfortunately, I can't really use natural light as the idiots who built my house put only a few tiny windows on the south side.

anybody have any pollen they want to trade? my gal would love to try her hand at propagating her own seeds. she doesn't have any flowers right now, but a q-tip could last a while. i've got some prints/syringes to trade... or a pereskiopsis? (for grafting per UNA) got some of them too.

pardon me if i jacked your thread, but i thought it might fit. thanks all!

Id be perfectly willing to trade some pollen. Hit me up with a PM. Lophophora will self pollinate though, but you wont get the same germination rates once you harvest the seeds.
