i have tried the store bought stuff (hoffmans) and i felt their was something wrong with it. on pans, it seamed to work fine untill i left my fan on and they dried out. really my falt and not the poo, but they never seamed to grow robust. so i tried again with regular cubs and they grew about 1.5" tall and looked sick. only about 5 ever showed up be for i tost it. my thought is they put a fungisid in it.
ask your self this, if dung is so esaly contaminated then why is the bag not full of mold when you get it, or after it has been opened many times? fungicid? just my opinion. try 100% organic worm castings.

here is what i did and it worked great.
i started pan cyans on mea. it grew even, so i transfered that to rye.
i put 8 cups of scotts 3-n-1 organic compost, 8 cups of verm, and 4 cups of water in a filter patch bag and pc'd for 1.5 hours at 15psi. (the amount of water you use varies by the amount of moisture in your compost.) i let it cool and spawned with 1 pint of colonized rye. incubated for 3 weeks. with cubies, they colonize in 7-9 days, but it took about twice as long with the pans.
after it was done, i poured the contents of 2 bags into a 16 gallon rubbermaid tote. it took 2 weeks to recover and start to pin. the results werent as good as poo, but were adequate, none the less.
i cant give an estamate on dry or wet weight, because i just ate them as they came

i've always had problems getting the pan cyans to colonize quarts, but with pints i never have a problem.

Don't use so much substrate in your jars. 1 cup per quart jar pre cooking. Make sure you sterilize completely. Filter discs really help speed things up. Low temps can stall them out.
If you get clean jars of mycelium there should be no problems fruiting them, UNLESS YOUR TEMPS ARE TOO LOW, or YOUR CASING LAYER INTRODUCES CONTAMINANTS.

The bags are contaminated. We don't call it contamination until we are trying to selectively grow a single fungus, while inhibiting the other fungi. The bags of shit from the store do have other organisms in it. THAT is why you pasteurize/sterilize it before introducing your fungi.
There is no fungicide in the hoffmans product. It works just fine to get up to three flushes or so, unless you are really lucky, or unlucky. If there were fungicide, it would have been a broad spectrum fungicide, and no fungi could even colonize it, let alone fruit on it.
Panaeolus/Copelandia have relatively weak mycelium. It is easily contaminated. The most agressive mycelium is the Hawaiian Strain. It forms a dense colony by the time it matures the first flush. But even that mycelium easily contaminates over time. After harvesting the first flush, the mycelium gets weaker, and so on.
Most of my contaminants are introduced from the air, and they take hold of uncolonized casing soil, and then reak havoc across the surface. Others are introduced along the shrinking border of the casing, and rapidly penetrate the colony.
The problem is it has WOOD in it. Wood is easy to clean at the surface, but more difficult to clean completely through. This means you can fully colonize the stuff, case it, and fruit it, BUT you may succomb to latent contaminants that were not completely removed, contaminants introduced with the casing soil, or from the air. IT WORKS, but yields are reduced due to Less usuable nutrition to the fungi, and contamination problems. In a manure only substrate, there is now undigested wood, or debris. There is very little substrate that is not colonized by the mycelium, so it is more difficult for the contaminats to take hold.
Store bought works, IT JUSt ISN"T IDEAL. I still use it, and a 2 cup substrate casing can yield a dose or two, before contaminantion, IF THINGS GO WELL.
It's the Just exactly perfect brothers Casing
PS I really really Copelandias.

Thanks for the help everybody I decided to start on agar spawn to a few different substrate jars, as an experiment. the jars will be used to spawn worm castings and SBP, as another experiment. Any suggestions for substrate jars to test?
