 Casing a not fully colonized half-pint jar..Need some advice

OK..Ive read the faq's and searched it, I know it is not good to birth until the jars are 100% colonized but my friend wants to experiment by casing a few of the jars that are like 90% colonized. He plans on keeping the casings in the incubator for like a week and a half instead of 2-3 days and patching when needed. He steralized his casing material in the mic. for 10 minutes and has produced mushies quite a few times with only 1 contam in his time. By keeping the casings in the incubator longer will the mycellium colonize as if it were colonized 100% in the jars?

some how i dont think it will work that way.
your uncolonized substrate is open to contams... especially if you are going to crumble and case. there will be contact between uncolonized substrate and vectors of contamination. There is really no way around that without having perfected your sterlie technique. i would just wait another week, in fact i have colonized jars waiting to be used. there is no point in ruining ur grow by being impatient.

If you had a flowhood, yes, you could do it. Oherwise I wouldnt waste my time.

If the jars stalled you could try flipping them, but I agree -- it's a contamination vector. If they don't finish at all (too dry or something) you could always cut out the uncolonized part if you want....

I've heard of doing something similar, only birthed one jar early due to slight contam, jar was 80 % colonized, dunked and cold shocked for 12 hrs,put into casing tray Without top lay added, let mycelluim colonize for 24 hours,cased in 1/4 in 50 verm/coir mixture, incubated for 3 days, saw significant mycellium growth, put into fruiting chamber, within a week, had over 50 pins. It was a first grow, considering that the cake was only partial colonized when birthed, and that it was only dunked for 12 hours, produced about 25 wet grams.
This next casing was dunked and coldshocked for 24 hours and is in a smaller tray. Hoping for a bigger yeild from this one.

well im assuming u threw out the uncolonized parts of the substrate.
if that is the case then this is not what EMPIRE means. he means casing the uncolonized substrate with the colonized.

Flip your jars and tap them so the cake breaks loose and you have a layer of air at the top. I've read that this introduces contaminants but I have been doing this for several runs in a row and haven't had a jar contam because of it.

Thanks for all the replies! My friend is very pleased with all the responses. He is proud to say that this morning he patched all 4 of the casings after 2 days of being in the incubator and the mycellium seems to be eating away at the simple 60/40 verm and coir casing material. He plans on leaving them in the incubator for about 3 more days at the rate the mycellium seems to be producing. incubator temps stay between 83-88 degrees and the casing seems to be drying out could my friend mist generously to avoid the casings from going dry, would that have any effect on the mycelliums growth rate, because my friend doesnt want it to slow down cuz of contams.
