Wrong jars & take off the foil before inoculation & leave it off. You want short fat Wide Mouth jars, not tall skinny Regular Mouth jars.

They look like 1/2 pint regular mouth jars, which don't have shoulders either. If they are WM, then they're pints, which they may stall at the bottom, but may just take longer to colonize. Yes, take the foil off, it hinders GE.

Yea, I found out I had the wrong dimension jars after inoculation. From what I've read this won't cause many problems, just longer colonization time.
I have holes in all the jars for GE, and the dry verm layer. I think I'm paranoid about getting contams.
Should I really take the foil off then? It doesn't seem to be hindering the mycelium.
EDIT: These jars do have a wide mouth.
With those jars, you will probably encounter a bit more trouble than just colonization time.
When I made this mistake, it caused the cake to get stuck at the lip when the cake was about halfway out during birthing. The result was quite a few mangaled "half-cakes"...still works though!
If you encounter this issue, some options available are:
A) Do what I did and get as much of the cake out as you can and use a properly cleaned utensil to remove the remaining peice(s).
B) Crumble the cake into chunks and case with verm
C) Wrap the jar in some strong tape and smash the bastard open.

You do want the foil off. I did my first batch using the same jars, wasn't aware that I wanted squat until it was a bit late. They consolidated fine except the bottom took quite a while longer than the rest, probably due to being compacted. Their fruiting's lackluster in comparison to my other cakes, which is in line with something I've seen RR say about the tall half pints.

Hopefully I won't encounter this issue. Have a feeling I won't since the openings actually get wider at the end. Thanks for the info though!

There is, it's about 3/4 inch thick in each jar. Just really hard to see in that pic, even looks wet! But it's paper dry.

There is supposed to be a dry verm barrier, but there's also supposed to be a lid... You don't have lids on your jars, man. I think that's what the facepalm was for. What tek did you follow that instructed you not to use lids?

There is a dry verm layer as stated above. I did have aluminum lids, but took them off today. From what I've read the dry verm layer should be enough for contam protection.

you didnt use lids? you sterilized with just a tin foil layer?
Tin foil is to be taken off with lids ON and a dry verm layer. The lid and the verm layer provide adequate protection against contaminates. Lids covered with tinfoil restrict GE..you need GE to colonize thats why tin foil is taken off with LIDS in place..
If you didnt use lids and just tin foil god help you...but use lids next time ...So id put that shit back on immediately
Your DRY VERM layer is suppose to be ALL the way to the top of the jar then leveled off.
Honestly you've probably already contamed your grow but you might be one lucky ass...follow the teks..

Not really seeing how it'd be drastically different using lids vs tin foil, isn't it serving the same purpose?

if i remember right. One of the old way to do the PFTek did actually only use tinfoil. But, it was two layers. One; with the innoc holes. The Other; to cover the first layer with the innoc holes. Since the dry Verm was there and the foil to almost act as GE it worked on some level.

Its way more open to any contaminates present and if its the slightest bit wet it gives it a pathway down to the nutritional layer your myc is feeding on.
But hell idk what will happen Ive never seen nor done that.

Oh well. Should of just stuck with my gut and not touched them.
Re-foiled them and holed them, guess only time will tell now.
