Ask your mushroom related photography questions here.
Does anyone use a macro ring flash unit? How do you like it? Please post some examples.

I don't, but if I ever happen to stumble across a million bucks, I'll definitely buy one. It's the bees knees for macro and some styles of portrait photography

Macro ring flashes are probably a better long-term investment as they are much more versatile, but for a (usually much) cheaper solution at least for still work like mushroom photography you could try an LED ring light. Given our usual working distances the relative weakness of the LEDs doesn't much matter. Mushrooms also don't move so "stopping the action" with a flash also isn't as important.

Suchen will you post some pictures that took using the LED ring light. I have tried using a couple LED lights before but i could never make the color balance look right - even in photoshop - so i wrote off LED lights. I'm not sure if i was using the "white LED" though.

Here are some examples of me using a $3 LED keyring flashlight with the camera flash set to half...

I have never used one, I just read a lot and what you just mentioned is the number one complaint. I am thinking about slapping together a DIY project using white and yellow (maybe even blue and red??) high intensity LEDs to try to get the color temperature right. I estimate it will cost around $60-70.
@BobZ: Unless I turn it sideways, the on-camera flash is often impeded by my lens due to being so close to the subject. How do you minimize this effect?
@Joust: I moved from essentially never using the flash to using it about 33-50% of the time. If I had on off-camera flash I would use it far more often.

Really it's ALL about light. The better you can control it, the more photography success have you will.

I keep three flashlights in my camera bag, two led and one luminous. I modified them to quick lock onto a small tripod. I usually use two of them as far from the subject as possible along with the onboard flash turned down all the way.
I really like how flash defines the edges of the subject. I also really like to see the smallest bit of glistening on wet mushrooms. However, I detest how cold my pictures usually turn out. It's a trade off.
I intend to purchase an off camera flash and a diffusor. I can't imagine a macro ring being beneficial for anything but 1:1 shots, in which case it is probably the best solution. I will buy one someday, but I can't see myself using it very often.
I really like suchens DIY idea. I've been thinking about fixing a neutral density filter onto my brightest led.

I don't even have the excuse of interchangeable lenses. This thing is just a beast:

> How often do you guys use a flash? Depends on how much time I want to invest in setting up for a shot. Usually, I don't use flash because I'm just enjoying the walk and I want to get to my next find Maybe I'll try and go for some more thought-through shots this week; I'll post back if that happens.
Oh yeah, on-camera flash sucks. The only situation in which it is usable is as a fill flash when snapshotting your nekkid girlfriend on a sunny beach. For all (quasi) serious types of photography: use light sources that can be positioned separately from the camera. Always.
