lol I suspect you're full of shit, but I'll play along. How do you know they passed out before they hit the ground? And I believe you mean its a physiological thing, sudden rush of blood and in anticipation of the end perhaps, so maybe both. Also drowning would be a horrible way to go out, hypoxia sounds painful, and extremely uncomfortable.
What ShadowHagi is referring to may be psychogenic shock, which generally leads to syncope. It is not a physiological response; syncope occurs totally as a psychological effect outside of physiological duress. On the other hand, sustained high or low blood pressure may also lead to passing out (more often low), if that's what you're talking about?
Also, hypoxia itself is not painful; the word itself refers to inadequate oxygen levels in tissue. As your muscles resort to anaerobic respiration lactic acid builds up, which may lead to the burning sensation someone alluded to later on. I'm not familiar with the psychological aspect of NDE or drowning, but I think maybe the idea of dying is what feels uncomfortable...your brain may go into hypoxic drive as [CO2] skyrockets and that may trigger a physiological/psychological pain response to attempt to gain air or otherwise struggle to swim?
Don't quote me on this, but I recall reading somewhere that (particularly obese) people die or pass out or something on the way down from sufficient heights from...I'm not sure but the lungs interact with the marked change in pressure or something along those lines in such a way as to cause death or syncope.

I took a half a bottle of sleeping pills and a jug of vodka one nite last week and nothing happened but a hangover.Are sleeping pills nowadays non-overdosable? I'm running out of time.Just got eviction notice.Broke.Fiance is with someone else.Unemployed after 5 loyal years at my uncles company just to be fired for getting a no insurance ticket.Cant sleep.Too depressed to go outside.The devils now at my door and i got nowhere to run.....bad things man!

I think the time is coming soon for me. I am a hoarder so I am buried alive and I could be very close to being homeless because the property I live in which is owned by my very elderly mom is in land court and she does not have the money to get it back or the one she lives in and I don't either. There are a host of other issues too but I won't go into more here.
What I am leaning towards is a cocktail of gatorade and antifreeze like the SNL guy used a few months ago. Anyone have any feedback on that mix?

yES, HOW COULD ANYONE STILL ALIVE KNOW THAT? THis gives hope to any potential suicide out there that if these brain surgeons here are having fun in life(and some of them really offered some pathetic answers-and some hilarious!), just about any normal person could figure out how to fix their problem. Or......adopt Woody Allen's solution-"There isnt any problem in the world too big to run away from." I agree. Sometimes, selfish or not, you just gotta pack your bags, leave a note saying dont call me I'll call you and just get out of town and go..........anywhere!

I know this isn't exactly on topic, but reading the comments about jumping off buildings at high heights reminded me of something..
did you guys know if a cat falls out of a window higher than 20 feet or so that it will basically act like a flying squirrel, meaning it's less likely to have any damages/death to itself what so ever because of the flow it gets itself into?
And if a cat fell out of like a 10 ft window it's gonna' have some broken bones.
I just think that's nuts.

I think drowning would be one of the most horrible ways to die. I almost drowned as a child and I still remember the horrible helpless feeling, and the gagging.
I almost drowned recently in a whitewater rafting accident its was horrifying seemed like it last forever its a slow panic filled death a true mental and physcial fight. I had to essentially had to choose whether i lived or died(to fight or not). For the first few seconds i did nothing, guess i wasnt really sure,or in shock.What it came down to in my mind is that even though i have terrible components of my life ie:horrible constant sickness and anxiety no girl, no job, little friends. I still think life is worth living not sure why, i feel that this is all a big test of my will to survive and im going to win

I still nominate exit bag with nitrous oxide.
On a side note, I accidentally, very nearly killed myself with high explosives. I'm not condoning going out with a bang, cause it's pretty unsafe to those around you. But, it is really only painful for a bit. Then body-chemicals take over. The natural instinct (at least for me) was panic and fighting for my survival. But at a point, there was nothing I could do once I was on the heli, and they couldn't give me anything for pain. While it hurt a bit, once I accepted that I would either die, or be saved, and nothing could be done, I felt peace despite the disaster I was.
So, I can (somewhat) understand self-immolation of the kind used in protest by monks and such. And anyway a little pain never hurt anyone, so if you could shift your focus from being dead-set on suicide being the only tool in your kit, things can always change. etcetcetc
What ever happened to the guy who doused himself in gas, lit a match, was saved & permanently disfigured? It seems like a lot of people try but call it god, fate, FSM etc, has a funny way of intervening. Don't take your shit for granted please!

If you live in the U.S., jump off the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia.

It's an 876 foot fall from railing to river bed. It is FOUR TIMES the height of the fall from the Golden Gate Bridge. It is one of the highest bridges in the world as a matter of fact.
If you jump from this, you'll most likely pass out on the way down, or die from a heart attack in mid-air. You'll never feel a thing. No way you'll survive the jump. Your body hits rocks and shallow water after falling for about 9 seconds in free-fall speed. Jumping off this bridge is the equivalent of jumping off the 87th story of a high-rise building.
My life is slowly but surely being painted into a corner..I was just not fucking wired for this world, the world has kicked my ass, and the score sheet isn't changing.......this is my choice of suicide.
It's within easy reach, if you live far away from it all you need is a way to get there. Google map it, get a bus ticket, and take a ride to Fayetteville, West Virginia, the bridge is right there going over Rte. 19.
Pick your moment, and over you go.
I'm not condemning or supporting suicide, I'm not judging anyone for wanting to do it. I'm not for or against it. I'm just answering the OP's question. No living being inherently WANTS to die, we all have a survival instinct that is very strong.
But it comes down to how much can a person lose, how much pain/loneliness/ destitution can a person endure, how much can you take away from someone, before that quality of life is simply not enough?
Not everybody was meant for this life. It's as simple as that. A million people commit suicide in some way or form on this planet every year, for thousands of different reasons.
I'm not trying to preach, I'm just explaining my motivations for posting this.
I'm not going to insult the OP by giving all the cliche "you should get help", "there is always light".....NO, sometimes there ISN'T. NO, not all problems in life are temporary. NO, some problems ARE permanent. Some things DON'T go away. You let time go by, and you lose chances. You DON'T get that back.
All you need is a bus ticket, and enough courage to go over that railing.
