 Need ID help in the Chanterelle family.

I can't pin-point the species. I am thinking it is either Cantharellus lateritius or possibly Craterellus odoratus. I am really a novice with thos entire family of mushrooms, I have picked trued chanterelles and I know how to ID those, but these are stumping me for some reason. There are way more species in this family than I originally thought, lots of canidates to go through and eliminate.
The pics are pretty good, my smell was off due to sinus problems, but I think the pictures show enough for a proper ID. If a full description would help any, let me know.
Also, if these turn out to be edible(I am fairly certain they are) does anyone have any experiance with them? How they compare to a true chanterelle? And how you would go about cooking these mushrooms by themselves?

Wow, VERY cool find!  I've yet to find any Chanterelles myself.
My bet goes to Chanterelle lateritius, although my book does not even list the other one you mentioned, so I'm not sure. From what my book says on lateritius, though, it seems to fit the bill!
My book also says it is a choice edible. It gives a recipe for Chaterelle lateritius with duck, but I doubt you want that. Here's all it says about preparing the actual Chanterelles:
Chanterelles usually have to be dug up from a semi-buried position in the soil, and the dirt trapped in their many nooks and crannies betrays this fact. A strong jet of cold water is the quickest and most effective way to clean them. Fortunately, unlike gilled mushrooms or softer, pored mushrooms, chanterelles can stand up to washing. They also keep well.
Nothing about cooking them by themselves, though... Sorry!

By the way, what was the spore print? Pinkish?
Or are you still working on that?

Like I said, I couldn't smell, and I didn't think to nibble it, so I'm not sure of its taste. The only distiguishing characteristics were that it grew mainly gregarious and cepitose, never really singular. There obviously isn't any true gills on these mushrooms, they are shallow grooves that dissapear towards the stem and get deeper towards the margin. The margin is always very irregualr and wavy at the margin when mature. The underside of the cap is what I guess you would call fertile? Its as if there are microscopic pores making up the entire underside of the cap, kinda like some types of polypores.
Thats about it, or atleast all I can think of right now, I didn't spend much tie with these musrhooms as my time was limited and the sun was setting.
Think its safe for a tsate test, maybe a little fried mushrooms with my steak tommarow night? The only real danger in this mushroom family that I am aware of is the Jack 'O Lantern. I know thats not what they are.

And yes, still working on a print, its not dropping very fast either, probably have to wait till tommarow and check it in the morning.

Yeah, I found that page already, thanks for the link though  Its hard to decide whether its lateritius or ordoratus. But I guess which ever it is its safe to consume.
I'm going for a small portion taste test tommarow.

A good point I forgot to add is how abundant these are, which is why I thought they might be odoratus. These things are fruiting by the hundreds in the forest behind my home. I mean they are everywhere!!!!1

Wow, cool!
One part of the odoratus description that sticks out to me is this:
The fertile surface is "ochraceoous orange" or with a "reddish tinge".
I can't really tell from your pics (my monitor sucks!), but do your specimens have that tinge to them?? Perhaps that might help you make the decision.

Excellent find. It seems really strange to be getting chanterelles already, but the references say that's normal down there.
C. odoratus sounds slightly closer, but it's not like anybody went out of their way to tell us how to distinguish between them. On the other hand, both are apparently equally edible, so either way a winner is you!

I've been picking a lot of chanterells in my life (in sweden) and if you get the right ones they are the yummiest thing you have ever tasted!!! But unfortunately i'm not familiar with your find. These ones are all very very tasty though:
Cantharellus Cibarius
Cantharellus Lutescens
Cantharellus Tubaeformis
Make a stew of them and serve with omelette for a rich snack, or serve with some game meat (deer is good) with boiled potatoes and some cranberry jelly... Food doesn't get ANY better than that! Seriously.
