Alternatives to Psilocybe cubensis.

You always hear about psilocybe cubensis, and not much about others. I was reading about how there are different kinds. According to wikipedia there is a plethora of different ones and definitely more than on their list.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psilocybin_mushroom Look under dosage.
According to them psilocybe cubensis has a dried psilocybin percentage of 0.63%; While psilocybe azurescens has a dried psilocybin percentage of 1.78%, over twice as much!
When I have bought shrooms in my area they always look like psilocybe cubensis, and I just assume they were cubensis.
Are they just as safe as cubensis?
When I say safe I'm not asking about the psilocybin, im asking is there anything else that would harm me more?
I'm thinking about growing some and I was just wondering the difference.
Are they harder/different to grow?
Are they different in any significant way other than double the psilocybin?
Why do people usually favor psilocybe cubensis?

There are several different families of mushrooms with psilocin. I would suggest putting a lot of research into this with the information that's already available on the site. There aren't going to be any extra safety concerns when dealing with different types of mushrooms as long as they aren't poisonous. When and if you decide to grow I would suggest starting with Cubensis as these are the easiest to grow and have a lot more information on them. Other types of mushrooms often times take a lot more experience to be able to successfully grow. I would suggest starting here if you are interested in growing and also looking at posts on this site thoroughly

Also, when you buy shrooms they are almost always Cubes. It's very unlikely someone would take the time to grow something harder just to sell it.

Thanks! I actually bought THAT exact DVD (years ago) and have watched all of it XD
Its funny you referenced that.
It was EXTREMELY hard to find.
I will probably start with Cubensis and when I am confident move up to those.
I wonder if the brown rice flower technique will work with the azurescens.
If and when I grow those I will post my results. Probably in a different thread.
The only place I can find with that exact strain is http://www.earthstongue.com/site/388422/product/Psilocybe_Azurescens_20cc_Spore_Syringe
and they want 30 dollars for it. Kind of a bummer but that is okay. If I can get the process down its worth a try.

Personally I only have experience with Cubes. I've just read up a bit on different types. Good luck though if you do decide to go with a different kind. I've been wanting to work with Pan Cyans for a while now.

No, azurecens will not grow on BRF. And they are the strongest only according to some tests done on dry specimens many years ago. The reports from people say different, there are a number of species with equal or higher potency than azurescens. And it has been reported that lignocoleus ('wood-loving') psilocybes contain a certain compound that can cause temporary paralysis or weakness in limbs, without any lasting consequences. Today it's believed that the strongest psilocybin containing species is Panaeolus cyanescens, and it's possible to cultivate it indoors, even on modified pf tek with manure. Other species like Psilocybe mexicana, P. galindoi, P. hispanica etc. can also be grown in same conditions and have similar potency. Azurescens, cyanofriscosa, subaeruginosa and other wood lovers have similar psilocybin levels, and they can be cultivated outside in woodchip beds.

Haha I know I wasn't using all the correct terminology but what exactly did I say that is terribly off? If I did I apologize. Like I said I only have experience with growing Cubes.

This should help you out. First off i'd start with cubes because theyre simple for most people, but honestly azures and cyans can be just as easy. especially if youre up north. where im at right now i can do azures or cyans in the basement because its colder, and they fruit at colder conditions. and still have cubes up stairs where its warmer. also i found a tek that say you can use the brf recipe for woodlovers like azures or cyan, just substitute the brf for sawdust. the tek is on this site just search for it. Growing azures, cyans and cubes are all the same difficulty for me so you should check it out.

I discarded some old cakes by burying them in my garden last year. We've had some perfect weather for mushrooms the past couple of weeks. Since I've noticed a few popping up in the garden. The stems are bruising anywhere from light green to blue with nice golden caps looking very much like the Thai Tantics I cultivated indoors last year. The spores that are dropping are purpleish in color. The first one I gently re-buried close to the surface. The second I am currently drying to try? Any advice or warnings?? I've only ever experimented with indoor cultivation and ingesting.
