That's probably too hot. Older info would have you incubate around 30C. Experience has shown that around 22C is much better. So be sure to check the temps involved.

soo, how are your jars exchanging gas through a blanket?
and 82 is too much
79 is probs the highest you should go
you can go as low as 61 and still get results

Jars don't need that much air, many many jars have colonized in plastic totes. 61F is ok for myc, but spores will be miserable at temps like that. 20C+, even up to 25-26C is good. My place gets cold, I've got some sympathy. I use a styrofoam cooler with a warm water bottle inside.

Good point, I'm a taper and I forget sometimes that it's not in style any more.

I've made up a little box to warm some cakes up with a small light bulb in - hoping that will help them colonise. The temp is about 29c but I'm not sure if the fac tthere's light there is a good / bad idea?
I taped over my injection holes too...

You're also creating one helluva fire hazard by laying that blanket over a DC power supply like that. Those things can overheat and short out very quickly, especially when under a blanket with no air moving over them.
I can almost guarantee 60f will colonize your jars faster than 83..

dont worry the jars them selves aren't 82f. thats just the temp reader device, the jars are actually quite cool to the touch where as the temperature thing feels warm. my holes are taped over with micropore tape. and good point whoever mentioned the fire hazard, thats something to think about..

well by direct light, i meant you dont want to put a lightbulb in the same box as your jars.
light is good.

OP, exactly how cold IS your ambient temp? there may not even be a need for incubation.
warm water bottles ftw. (if needed).

*sorry for jacking? the thread, was just trying to keep things together *
I've now got some tinfoil kinda stopping 'direct' light, but it is in the box non the less. 6/7 days and they do seem to be begining colonising. The temp is a good 26 - 30 degrees
What is it about the bulb in there that is not ideal?

30 degrees C is equal to 86 deg F. If I were you I would lower that temperature. Your are risking contamination at that high a temp.
