I just discovered them in the past 6+ months and MAN... it's not like house or electronic music thats more danceable. They have a more experimental, more thought provoking, instropective sound. I've always been into all kinds of music as I play a few instruments but I never thought I'd love electronic music like I do If you do listen to them, how did you find out about them and how long has it been since you started listening?

I first got into IDM in late 1996, when I saw the Aphex Twin Ventolin video and a Squarepusher live DJ set on the European music network VIVA.
Good stuff.
You'll be glad to know that there's a lot more out there, too!
For instance, if you like the Analord albums, you'd probably also enjoy Luke Vibert's Lover's Acid.

I really got into IDM back in '07 when I just happened across Amon Tobin, around the time Foley Room came out. First song I heard was At the End of the Day and it made quite an impression.

I've been listening to electronic music since 2002-2003. Started off with more industrial electronic stuff, but then I moved into the psychedelic stuff, and only in the last 3 years or so have I got really more into IDM and breakcore stuff.
Never really got hooked on Aphex Twin to be honest. Never really struck a cord. I love Boards though.
My favorite by far is Venetian Snares. Been addicted to his work for 3 year or so. Have you heard his stuff?
He also does music under Last Step, acid funk type shit.
and then of course, there's Igorrr, a son of a bitch from France.
Sometimes I prefer chill, sometimes I prefer the breaks stuff.

I got into Aphex Twin around 11-12 years old after I had been digging Amon Tobin. "Flim" was the song that pulled me in and from then on it was true love. When I found Selected Ambient Works Vol 1 and 2 it was heavenly.
Then I discovered Autechre and that's all I really listen to now. Those guys are on another level, and are the most ahead of the game electronic musicians. Plus, they actually put out new material (unlike the 11 year stretch that Richard D James has taken not putting anything out for Aphex Twin, save the AFX EP's andThe Tuss releases.

Love boards of canada and aphex twin. My local record shop has a box set of 10" warp records with a continuous groove plate. Not sure if I want to part with £140 of my precious sovereigns for it, but it's mighty tempting.
I first heard pete standing alone in 1996 on John Peel's radio 1 show, which considering the dross that's on it during the day, still makes my head spin to this day. Only heard aphex twin later but I saw the music video for Windowlicker and yep, always liked him since.

yea, aphex is great. I started listening after learning he did the song Avril 14th for the Marie Antoinnette film that came out a while back.. That song is so different from everything else he does, but still I can see how it fits as a body of work. I wish he'd do more with piano.

Uh, was nodding my head to boards back in '96 (wish they had 1969 sunshine released then, it would have been profound) and probably heard Aphex twin loads of times on the same show, first remembered hearing come to Daddy on that Nicolas cage film, 8mm.

Check out Jon Hopkins(Opalescent), Joey Fehrenbach(Mellowdrama), Ulrich Schnauss, a lot of moby's ambient stuff is great, sounds from the ground, the bionaut, emancipator, bonobo, carbon based lifeforms are all good to start with.
Everything has it's own flavor, but it is all pretty close to BoC and the like.
I can't get enough of this downtempo electronica goodness . I just discovered this genre about a year ago.

I've loved all of the above mentioned artists for many years... I've been looking for some new stuff though, and found an entire record label that I've been diggin on. Check out Enig'matik Records. In particular they have two compilation albums out on Bandcamp called Painting Pictures on Silence, and they are incredible. Glitchy, dark, experimental, excellently-composed IDM. Hoping to test them out on my next trip.

I find Aphex Twin and Squarepusher to be really mind fucky on acid
I really got into U Ziq while trippin on shrooms though. It's not so dirty sounding. Much more upbeat but not in a gay way...
