Stunning photos Mayo :awesome:

I hope to go for a hunt sometime this week... if I can find the time (new job keeping me very busy). I haven't been out at all this season. I'll contribute to the thread if I find anything interesting.

Heya Mayo

How have you been man?  Can't wait to see another season of your finds and amazing phots.

I started a Melb/Vic inactives and edibles thread, might just move the pics here, and keep this one rolling over instead.

My finds so far for 2012:

Russula cf clelandii

Cantharellus sp.

Ramaria gracilis.

Amanita ochrophylla

Marasmius sp. probably M. elegans

Amanita sp, and Galerina or perhaps Cortinarius

Pluteus sp. (I think P. romelli)

Cortinarius cf. australiensis.

Conjoined Amanita.

Gymnopilus junonius.

Favolaschia calocera.

Leucoagaricus ooliekirrus.

Omphalotus nidiformis.

Mycena sp.

Posita sp. (Perhaps P. pelliculosa)

Boletellus sp. 1

Boletellus emodensis.

Baby Amanita.

    .

Infected Bolete.

Phylloporus sp.

Lichenomphalia umbellifera. (I think these were definately L. umbellifera, not the normal L. chromacea I normally find. Colour was a lot duller, and size shape was slightly different.)

Fomitopsis sp. (Perhaps F. Pinicola).

Look forward to seeing everyones finds.

Happy hunting y'all.  :mushroom2:

1. Resembles Galerina hypnorum, how big were they, and was there any moss around?
2. Not sure without a pic of the cap.
3. Not sure without a pic of the cap.
4. Leratiomyces ceres
5. Inocybe sp.
6. Mycena sp.
7. Not sure from that pic. The cap texture kind of reminds me of Hebeloma though.
8. Cruentomycena viscidocruenta
9. Geastrum saccatum

Cool finds.

Did you get cap shots of 2+3?  It would help with ID. Also of 5, because looking at the side of the cap it is probably a pretty cool looking mushroom.

During today's hunt I made sure to get cap shots. Unfortunately I don't have cap shots of 2/3 from the previous post :frown:.  Couple more flicks of some interesting finds! I.D's much appreciated  I wonder what animal #18 is

10. Leratiomyces Ceres

11. Pycnoporus Coccineus

12.

13.

14.

15. Chlorophyllum sp

16.

Snuck in a quick hour hunt after work today in a new spot.

Managed to find about a dozen Macrolepiota clelandii aka breakfast. :woot:

Laetiporus portentosus.

I also found the smallest Mycena I have ever seen in my backyard yesterday, roughly half the hight of a match, and the cap was probably only a centimetre across at the widest point.  Went out to photograph it today and slugs had nommed the top off of it.  :oldman2:

Happy hunting all.  :mushroom2:

10. Leratiomyces ceres.
11. Pycnoporus coccineus.
12. Most likely Cortinarius.
13. something something....Pluteus...something something. (I was never here)
14. Probably Amanita xanthocephala, would need to see the entire mushroom to be certain though.
15. Chlorophyllum sp.  Either C. rachodes or C. brunneum
16. Possibly another Chlorophyllum or Macrolepiota, the colours seem kind of odd in this photo.
17. Not sure. Tempted to say Inocybe though.
18. It's a kangaroo skull I think, seems shorter than the ones I normally see, more stout.
19. Not sure without gill shot.
20. I think another Macrolepiota, but not one I am familiar with.
21. I think they might actually be a small Laccaria sp.

If you try to get mutilple pictures of each mushroom it makes ID'ing a lot easier.  So cap, gills, substrate, and anything else that looks significant.  If you "pose" the mushroom right you can get them all in one shot a lot of the time.

You are definately having some interesting hunts.

Psathyrella.

Thanks Alan, that was my first thought, something about what I could see of the stems made me think Laccaria.

Psathyrella seems to be my least favorite genus to try and ID at the moment, besides spore colour and fragile stems I haven't fully familiarised myself with them. The fact that they are so varied is not helping either.

Yes, my photography needs much improvement! I tend to just quickly get the iphone out and take a quick snap of the various mushrooms I see along the way...for some reason I feel bad uprooting/snipping the thing and taking a photo of the gills - maybe i'll just post pictures and not ask for the I.D  99% of the time my eyes are trying to home in on those distinctive sub caps  Of the photos so far are any of them good eating? P.s thanks for taking the time to I.D them all!

You shouldn't feel bad about that, but if you do you can use a mirror to get the gills in the shot.  If you are going to spend time taking mushroom pictures, you really should get pics of the undersides as well.

Ideally pics should have a few mushrooms that have not been picked and a few that are laying down in front of them, so you can show all the relevant features in one photo.

Psathyrella is difficult because it is polyphyletic and should be split into at least 5 genera.

Your photography is fine, it's actually pretty decent for an iphone, you just need to get more details in your shots or take more shots of each specimen.  You'll more often then not find yourself unable to get an ID without shots of both gills and cap, I used to feel bad about moving some species to get gill shots too, but as Karode told me very wisely, you only need to do it once and then next time you'll know what the mushroom is so there will be no need.

15,16&20 are all potentially delicious edibles, you would need to collect them and do a proper ID request with spore prints though. There is one toxic look a like with those called Chlorophyllum molybdites, it is not overally common in Australia, but I believe it can be found here.  It's distinctive in the fact that it has a green spore print where the others are white.  But like I say if you collect something along those lines chuck up an ID request and you'll get a pretty quick answer.

I forgot to add that if it is an Amanita species you are trying to ID, you need to dig under it slightly many defining features of an Amanita can be either at the base of the stem or underground.
