VCU student arrested on drug charges, dorm evacuated after police find unidentified compounds
RICHMOND, Va. — A Virginia Commonwealth University student is facing drug charges following an investigation that led to the evacuation of a dorm.
University police tell media outlets that 27-year-old Tyler Herndon is charged with possession of marijuana and a controlled substance, the designer drug DMT.
VCU police evacuated Warner Hall as a precaution on Tuesday after they found unidentified compounds and liquids in Herndon's room. Police allowed students to return to the dorm about two hours later.
It's the second drug-related evacuation of a college residence hall in Virginia this year.
In late March, authorities evacuated a residence hall at Christopher Newport University after a suspected methamphetamine lab was discovered in one of the rooms.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A drug investigation forced VCU police to evacuate an entire dorm on the campus Tuesday, after they discovered chemicals that could have been dangerous.
It happened at Warner Hall, a dorm on the corner of North 10th and East Leigh streets.
VCU police say the incident started with a drug investigation into Tyler Hendon, a 27-year-old working toward his PhD. Police charged him with possession of marijuana and DMT, a designer drug.
Later in the day, police went to his dorm and found liquids and glasses that could have been dangerous, so they called Hazmat crews and evacuated the dorm.
"People were trying to go in there to get stuff for classes or get something to eat and it was just causing a big hiccup in everybody's day," said John Harwood Scott, a student who also lives in Warner Hall.
"I was scared because there was caution tape up because I didn't know if it was a crime scene or if someone got hurt," added Joanna Kyriakidis, another student.
Police had to bag up the items they found in Hendon's room and test the air to make sure it was safe for students.
A VCU campus website lists Hendon as a student working toward his PhD in Human and Molecular Genetics. He is said to have gotten his undergraduate degree at Florida State in biochemistry.
"You know you see people every day and you never suspect that people in our dorm room could be doing something like that, like cooking your own homemade drugs." said Scott.
VCU police emphasized that students were never in any danger. Students were let back in the dorm within about 2 hours. We're told Hendon could face further charges, as police officially identify the substances found in his room.

great job , taking future doctor off the streets and throwing him in jail where he can do so much good reaserch on molecular genetics!

DMT is not a designer drug.
A naptha extraction will not blow up a building.
and you do not "cook" DMT.

Pretty stupid to do it in a dorm though. He should have made ayahuasa instead. A very light dose of that helps stuff you learn in class, especially math music, and art stick

QFT. The concept that a jug of naptha poses any more threat than a canister of butane or an incorrectly placed space heater is insane. definitely not bombsquad/fire department concern
also, im somewhat surprised they figured out it was DMT. Im betting the "meth lab" mentioned was actually another DMT extraction.

He may be on a scholarship that pays for dorm room only... Also, its hard to get a lease for only a few months, harder if you have a criminal record. If he lives far away, dorm could be the easiest way to go for him. They might be upperclassmen dorms too. My bro is in sweet upperclass dorms in an out of state school. It is more like an apt complex than a dorm. Meeting people, to sell to or just hang with is tough off-campus...
I find no shame in dorm living. We are all at diff points in our life, for him dorms may be where he is at, age has nothing to do with it.
