Okay, well, either none of my specimens dropped spores, or the spore print is white. I took a blue bandana and wiped the area where I tried taking a spore print, and it did have a very small amount of white stuff on it. I wasn't sure if it was spores or not, though.
Anyway... Now I'm wondering if this isn't maybe some sort of Mycena?
The mushrooms definitely don't dissolve when they die. They simply dry up and shrivel, reducing in size and fading in color greatly as they do so.

is the stalk viscid or slimy when fresh and moist. if those specimens you took home are still not too old try to check that out please.

No, the stalks were not viscid or slimy at all that I remember. Not noticeably so, at least. One of the specimens I picked was used to take a spore print, and the other has already shrivelled and dried.
For some reason I have a strong suspicion that they are Mycenas of some sort, but I don't think anyone mentioned this as a possibilty before, so I could be way off.

OK.
If we go with Mycena, then they key out as members of section Typicae, "which includes at least fifty non-descript gray, brown, and blackish species from northeasern North America." The books indicate that accurately identifying these guys to species is difficult.
Here's a link to a key for Mycena (of Norway) which you might find useful (or just too intense to use). You'll probably have to get some fresh specimens to play with to go through it. Good luck!
Sorry I can't be more helpful for this one. Mycena seems a resonable possibility, but it looks like it's gonna be really tough to go farther than section Typicae.
You might try looking up Mycena fagetorum, which at least has a description similar to your specimens.
Happy mushrooming!

Wow! Thank you so much for that link!
Those photos are the most beautiful mushroom photos I've ever seen! The tiny Mycenas growing from the leaves were especially interesting!
After looking through all of them, though, I really don't think these mushrooms I found are Mycenas because their gills are completely different from all the ones in the photos on that site.
So now I'm thinking you guys were right in your first guess of Coprinus?

The world may never know.
P.S. Sorry if this is a stupid question, but do Coprinus species actually drop their spores, or are the spores simply spread when the mushroom dies and melts/disintegrates??
I was thinking maybe that's why my mushrooms didn't have a spore print. Plus I thought it was weird that the gills would be mottled black if the spores were white.

k, cool, thanks!
i am going to assume that the spore print of these mushrooms was some sort of very dark, almost blackish color. i think this because
1. the gills were definitely mottled black
and
2. before i went away this weekend, i noticed that the very top portion of the stem (which was underneath the cap) of the larger specimen i had growing in my room was very dark brown or black in color.
i'm assuming that the two attempts i made at getting a spore print simply failed because all the spores had already been dropped in both cases. (is this common with smaller mushroom species at all??)
i think if the print was white, i would've seen a lot more white stuff on the blue bandana than i actually did.
lastly, i don't think anyone has mentioned that white collar-type thing around the stem that the gills are attached to. shouldn't that be useful in identifying this mushroom more easily?
as of right now i'm thinking the photos i took and information i got about this mushroom are really not sufficient enough to identify it at all. better luck next time, i guess!

I too think it is a Coprinus, I did find a few similar shrooms but they had white gills and were Mycenas.
