Identification help - SE Queensland Australia
    #16001934 - 03/27/12 01:26 AM (12 years, 4 days ago)

Hello!

I wanted to find some info on a fungi we found but we don't know the name.  Can someone help us identify it?

It was found in SE QLD, Australia, on a tree.

I don't have much info so I hope the pictures are clear enough

Thanks!

Nano

Ganoderma sp.  Not sure which one I am not very good with them yet.  :tongue2:

In an attempt at being brave I would guess either Ganoderma tsugae or Ganoderma lucidum depending on what kind of tree it was growing on.

nice find!  Any of the lacquered red Ganoderma can be used for Reishi.

W/o specific host tree, it's impossible to get to genus but that's academic anyway.

Thanks for your help guys.

As you can tell, this is the first time I'm paying attention to this area of nature.

I wanted to identify it to do some research, as I was not sure if it would be something poisonous or not.  I have a dog that became very interested in it (caught him smelling it a few times) so as a precaution I removed it from the tree.

Regarding the tree, I'm not sure if it is something you see and you can tell straight away what is it, but here are some photos in case you can.

I am in Noosa, Queensland, Australia.

Thanks for your help guys!!

Ganoderma multipileum - An interesting comment on Ganoderma  of Asia/Australia, although I haven't been able to find the source Gerhard references.

What Wiki has to say about Ganoderma multipileum

There is some really good information on Australian Ganoderma (Sepecifically from QLD) here:  http://researchbank.swinburne.edu.au/vital/access/manager/Repository/swin:7493  Just click on the "02whole.pdf" link.

"...Two isolates were identified to be isolates of Ganoderma cupreum (H1) and Ganoderma weberianum (H2)."

Interesting,  I suppose this info should be entered into MO's list of species.

well, I googled this phrase and there are plenty of good choices for keys or sources for identifying trees

trees of queensland identification

another search you could do
dichotomous key to trees of queensland

Hope that helps.  You wouldn't believe how much you can teach yourself by doing searches like those.

A photo of the leaves would be helpful... and flowers, fruits, seed pods if it has any. The bark alone isn't much to go by. You could also try posting it in  The Ethnobotanical Garden.

@RD Yes, I use Google a lot every day, although in this case I think it's not a problem with the search tool itself, I couldn't find an answer, probably because all the information I'm getting is a lot to digest in one day.  I'm very new to this so all I'm reading in "fresh and new to my brain" quite a lot to digest.

Tried looking in several sites, looking at a lot of pictures (mainly trying to find the leaves) but couldn't find it :frown:

Probably it's right in front of my nose :frown:

@TimmIT  Thanks!  I have updated the photos in the first post now   I'll try posting in that website too!

THANK YOU all for trying to help me!

Oh, by the way, the only reason I'm trying to identify the tree is because I read that it is important to identify the host tree to properly identify the fungi.

And I'm asking OP, if I can borrow pictures for my blog?

Thank you,
