first good job
    #15989503 - 03/24/12 01:12 PM (1 year, 2 months ago)

Okay, so I finally graduated and landed my first full-time job. Assembly-line type job. Only starts at $8.47/hr, but can get raises and abuse the overtime system.  I also want to move out in 2-3 months and get my first apartment. Then the real growing can begin.  :uptosomething:
Anyways, how do some of you people deal with the daily grind? I've never worked this many hours before, and I fear it's gonna slowly kill me lol. Also, was your first apartment kind of a pain in the ass?

Yeah, I didn't want to sell my soul to the workforce... but it's the only way I'll be able to have nice things and live my own life. I just hope the shifts fly by.

I've rarely worked legit 40hr a week. It wasn't bad. It was an internship at corporate. Free snacks, nice bosses, challenging but not exceedingly difficult. It was nice because I knew it was only temporary though.

Just gotta do it man.  If you don't like it, scheme your way out of the system...there's plenty of ways.

And yeah, my first apartment/rented space turned out to be a glorified shit hole...you kind of live and learn with stuff like that and you'll know what to look for next year when your lease is up :smirk:

:whathesaid:
The worst paying job I've ever had was $5/hr (I was 15, and it only lasted a week).
I can't imagine trying to pay the bills at anything less then $10/hr, but then again I live in a spendier city.
Right now I'm sitting at a lovely $16/hr with a little overtime here and there.

It's just good because I will get enough hours, I've never made enough doing part-time jobs. Yeah it's like $1 more than minimum, but at least I can get a raise. Any other job I've had didn't give anyone raises... shitty places.

You'd be better off being a waiter.

You'll average 12.00/hr

Stick with your job. A waiter has to put up with so much bullshit... Do all the overtime you can and work when there are shut downs and stuff. You will soon be making more money than you know what to do with. SAVE IT for the bigger things in life that are investments. One day you will have your own house. $8.75 is not bad at all, that's $13.125 on OT. If ya do it right and work weekends you could prob pull 1k+ assuming you get paid every 2 weeks. Also, you job probably provides you with benefits, learn them and start up your 401k, even better if they match your contributions!

I get paid every week, which is really nice. I know they have a 401k and match it... thanks for making me feel positive about this. It's already wearing me down.

First 'good' job for me was $15/hour, and I make pretty well over that now. I know a lot of people that make good money with unlimited overtime hours, but that is way not for me, 40 hours of my life a week is plenty of sacrifice.

I'd look into getting into some kind of school or training immediately, you will be thanking yourself for it down the road, and the sooner you start the more you will make by the time your as old and crusty as me

My last job I made bank on overtime but I was working too much, like 60 hours a week...and it was graveyard shift so I had no social life. Then I caught pneumonia from breathing too much dust on the job site and was bedridden for a while.

Would love to still work there if it wasnt for the dust though.

Good advice unknown1123 and c1dh3d. This sounds likes it's a great starting job. Although, we'd all love to get paid more than we currently do, you have to start somewhere and you've got to prove you're worth more money. The 401K match is a huge deal. Take advantage of it and max out as much as you can.

From what it sounds like you're young, which means compound interest is going to be an amazing ally for you (if you're on the right end of it). Try to put your money into things that are assets (things that throw off income) and avoid the liability traps out there (things that never stop accruing expenses) and you'll do just fine!

Congrats on the new job!

Good luck!
