It's not about insecurities fazdazzle. Is it an insecurity to be offended when people bully someone with a disability and call them names like "you fucking retard" just because of their disability? If you think so then I feel sad for you.

no, see i disagree here because like I said,in 15 years they'll be trying to change the next politically correct word because people will start using that as an insult, so will you then again stop using that word too? whatever it may be?
on a lighter note, while just out running I thought about this thread and what doobie had said and wondered "I wonder how many people out there have been looked in the eyes by a doctor and have been told "You are retarded" and the doctor was telling the truth.

Right, sure. So when people say "that guy is a fucking retard" they surely mean it in just a clinical fashion. Nothing derogatory about it.
The English language is a living thing. It changes over time and it's common knowledge that when you are calling someone a "retard" that you are using it to put them down. Regardless of the origins of the word that no longer applies to today's verbiage. And you know it.
Your reading comprehension is poor. You might want to retard the rate at which you respond to statements you clearly misunderstand.
I'll try to be a bit clearer in what I said here.
To call someone a retard is disparaging. I agree. This was never a clinical term. To say that someone suffers from mental retardation or that they are mentally retarded has been used in the past and is probably still used by some older doctors and people from my generation who have absolutely no intention of being insulting when they do so. They are just using the language that they learned to describe a medical condition.

No way jose. I'm not talking about bullying them; I think that's very wrong. I'm just saying that it's just a word so it can be used negatively or as a descriptor with no emotional baggage attached. If someone says "this person is mentally retarded," it does accurately describe a mentally handicapped person according to the defintion, just like the OP's statement and his prof., BUT it's been determined to be ill mannered to say that because of insecurities that have arisen surrounding the word. This applies to using the word to debase someone who isn't actually mentally handicapped - it wouldn't be wrong if they didn't have insecurities about people accepting them. If they didn't get mad in the first place it wouldn't have taken hold as a way to make fun of someone. So, like i was saying, you could play semantics and logic and say hey look it fits the word deal with it, but you're going to upset a lot of people, which is kind of bad since it's easy to avoid. I generally will take the later route even though it's kind of superficial, since insecurities will not be completely uprooted in this world for a long time.
What I don't understand is why in some situations the common derogatory form is seen as bad but in the descriptive way it's not. This applies more to the word gay, as in it's not PC to call someone gay with malice (if they're not) but it's ok to call a homosexual person gay. Is it wrong to call a homosexual person gay with malice? This kind of goes back to how you phrased your sentence, "you fucking retard," is automatically negative and debasing since we've attached negative meaning to the word "fucking."
You may have it all sorted out for youself in your head, but I'm still trying to figure this out, so calm yourself a bit

I like to use words like retarded (it means slow). I also like to use words like gay and fag. Such as, "hey stop being such a fag." (means to weary or labor or annoying)
The political correctness of this day and age is annoying as fucking all get out. Bunch of retarded fags trying to tell me what sounds I can make with my mouth to describe how I feel. They can gtfo for all I care.

I say "that's retarded" when a person with a normal brain does something retarded.
It's like in the video up there, both for "faggot" and "retarded".

Mental retardation is a category. It has since been narrowed down to more specific medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, downs syndrome.... But that does not make them not retarded as they still fit within the definition of the word.
I think the bad blood arises from the broad meaning of the word. People don't get angry when you use a retardant to put out a fire so why do they get so upset when you use it to describe a person or idea that slows progress or ability. Whether you use it to describe mental conditions, ideas, or even derogatorily you are using the word as defined. People need to stop getting so caught up in terminology and start judging people bases on actions.
Having said that, there is still a time and place for its use. Like adults shouldn't use it derogatorily towards children in the child's presence as the child may not have a complete understanding of the words intended use and may be discouraged as a result. But if an adult has an incomplete understanding of the word then they are retarded as they don't have the same excuse as the child because they've had much more of an opportunity to come to the proper understanding and technically they have slowed their understanding making them fit within the category of retarded.
