First Grow - BRF Cakes - SGFC
    #15870263 - 02/27/12 11:40 AM (12 years, 23 days ago)

Greetings,

First off, I would just like to say thank you to the entire Shroomery community for sharing your wealth of knowledge. I read up on the entire process before attempting the grow, and it looks like it will be paying off soon. Please feel free to critique my process, I welcome constructive criticism

Introduction

I've always loved mushrooms, especially cubes, I've had some major spiritual experiences and I've recently been wanting to be able to journey on a regular basis. I've read up on cultivating your own fungus in the past, and it seemed easy enough so I decided, what the heck lets do this ! One major bonus to this was the fact I wouldn't have to rely on shady dealings to obtain fresh boomers.

I stumbled across a very outdated PF Tek, which eventually led me back here to Shroomery. It was here I was introduced to the lets grow mushroom videos which were very informative and strait to the point. I will eventually purchase the DVD when I'm ready to move on to other TEK's

Ordered my Verm and BRF from Amazon (Bob's Red Mill flour, and generic, Fine Hortic Vermiculite) - Purchased two 64 QT tubs from Walmart and crafted these into a SGFC and glovebox.

I was hesitant to purchase a PC for my first grow, so I opted in for a 28QT Steamer that I picked up at Fry's for less than $20. Lastly, I purchased a 5pack of spores from a vendor.

Preparation.

I followed the video's to the T, and was quite stoked to sanitize my first jars. Once they finished steaming for 90 minutes I wanted to inoculate right away, it was quite a test of my willpower and I was pretty shocked at how quickly I was getting addicted to this new hobby. I've officially caught the bug at this point.

Inoculation.

I was quite paranoid when it came down to contamination and took every precaution available to keep my work place sanitary. I didn't use any tyvek sleeves, but did opt in for an N95 surgical mask. I also used standard latex gloves and used plenty of alcohol to sanitize my hands and gloves, I used a typical wax candle instead of an alcohol lamp and flame sterilized between each jar. I was so stoked to be inoculating my first jar's that on two of the cakes I failed to inoculate on all 4 sides (only got 3, lol). I also made the mistake of using too much spore solution in a few of the jars, more on this later.

Colonization.

After prepping and knocking up 10 jar's it was now time to play the waiting game. After 3-4 day's I began to see the first signs of life.

Sorry for the cruddy pic, it looks contammed, but believe me that is healthy looking white myc. These pics were taken in the evening and no natural light source was available.

After 10 days

In the pic above, the 5 jars on the right were inoculated 2 day's after the first batch on the left. These were knocked up using the proper amount of spore solution, causing them to explode in growth of the saturated cakes. Two of the jars (Not pictured), failed to colonize, this was likely due to being saturated with spore solution, any thoughts on this ?

20 days

You can see that 3 of the jar's are not having the best time colonizing. I think this may have been caused by either failed gas exchange (Micropore tape is on the inoc holes) or due to being saturated in solution.

I left them alone for another week, went out of town and came back to two of my jar's were pinning in the jar !

At this point I decided to birth them. Looking back on it, I should have only birthed the two that were pinning and left the remaining jars to consolidate.

Birthing, and the Dunk and Roll.

I birthed the cakes and let them soak in room temp water for 24 hours. Rolled them gently in verm and placed them in my SGFC. I'll update this post with the progress. The cakes were covered in what appeared to be hypnal knots, so I have a good feeling some pin porn is on its way !

Thanks again Shroomery for helping noobs like us get into this great hobby.

Good looking first attempt, and great post!

It looks like you have the FC sitting on jar lids which does not leave much room to breath. Try putting them on actual jars for a few more inches.

And your perlite is looking a bit low. I counted about 6 vertical drill holes on the empty chamber, and about 5 visible with the perlite--I can not be certain because there is no side profile shot, but just incase it is always good to have at least 5 inches of perlite in the chamber.

Welcome to the shroomery!

May your fruits be bountiful!

Thanks for the feedback.

I placed the container on four jars instead of the lids.

Heres a profile of the tub, was low on perlite so I added enogh to have 5", let me know if it still looks low.

looks like there is a towel under the fc...I would ditch that for sure

the tek also calls for 1/4 holes every 2 to 3 inches...doesn't look like enough to me, but hard to tell from a pic

Looking better!

And as Poison said: ditch the towel. There needs to be airflow under the tub... Try setting the whole thing on a metal baking sheet to make a container for all of the water that is going to drip out. Line it with paper towels so it will be easy to clean up. I did something similar to this--helps a ton.

Given that that is a small tub, the holes look fine to me. Too many and the humidity levels will hurt. Just be sure to fan the crap out of that thing, and you will be good to go!

Thanks guy's !

The towel was only there for when I added more perlite, didn't want it to drip all over my desk. Good idea regarding the baking sheet, if I notice any pooling in the morning I'll have to craft a similar rig.

Humidity is sitting around 95%, I think the holes should suffice for now, but I'll keep a close watch on it. I'll just keep fanning and post some pics of the pins as they come in

    #15885394 - 03/01/12 11:05 AM (12 years, 20 days ago)

Alright, looks like we have some pins on 4 of the 5 cakes !

This cake only has two, but looks like one of these is going to be a monster.

This one has the most pins, about 5 total

Only 2 pins on here, but is producing what appears to be a healthy fruit.

Not sure if this one is a pin or not, any thoughts ?
