thanks alot dude. just a question though. have you seen a noticeable difference between tubs where you did not add gypsum and ones where you did.
and when you say you pasteurize the gypsum. do you hydrate it first. and then try to keep the temerature at around 160. or whats your procedure.

It's not necessary to pasteurize gypsum, since it is a mineral. Adding it to the hot water is suggested because it's the easiest and quickest way to get the appropriate amount of gypsum dispersed into your sub as evenly as possible. I've never seen gypsum clump, personally. If you want to be safe, you can sterilize the gypsum, since it is, again, a mineral, it is not prone to contamination nor did it ever have beneficial microbes that would be killed by boiling water.

i use the light brown granule garden gypsum. and that shit is a disaster to work with when you get it wet by itself. it turns to mud.

Inocuole is right about gypsum being a mineral and not being prone to contaminates. However, I pasteurize my gypsum in the oven with my verm and coffee because I do not know where that gypsum has been and contaminates can land and linger on the gypsum.
I put my gypsum in the oven at about 150F for 90 minutes, in any oven-safe container with foil over it, and then mix it in with the substrate after the gypsum and substrate are both cool. The gypsum will get needed moisture from the substrate.
Let me reference back here at how I pasteurize in the oven. I pasteurize my coffee and other supplemental ingredients in the oven because of a few reasons. - I use Damion's pasteurization method for my coir. The coir alone takes up a lot of space in the bucket, so, mixing in the supplemental ingredients in the bucket as well makes it very full and difficult to stir. - When the substrate cannot be mixed correctly all the hot water sinks to the bottom. There is soggy substrate at the bottom of the bucket and drier substrate at the top. The water distribution becomes very uneven, and since the heat from the water is what pasteurizes the substrate, it is now not evenly pasteurized.
This wouldn't be a problem with a wider bucket than the standard 5-gallon hardware store buckets, but that's what most people use.
That is why I pasteurize all my supplemental ingredients in the oven with the technique mentioned above.

I will be able to answer that question in about a month. I have done a few tubs with just plain coir and it worked well. Recently, I did a few tubs with spent coffee grounds added in and it turned out well. Coffee increases yield from my experience. I started using gypsum in my latest tubs which have been consolidating for 2 weeks and have 1 more week to go.

the gypsum seems needed, but im afraid of coffee. it seems to lead to a higher rate of contamination. and im getting 8 per 2 flushes, so better off not.

So with gypsum and coffee you would get like 16 per 2 flushes! Probably not . Well what ever you do

Nice second flush.
When you harvested the first flush did you pull them out or cut them off?

i couldnt tell the difference really but cuting them was faster
i have a great idea. im going to build a platform on the bottom of each tub that has strong wires conected to the corners of the platform and the wires will run straight up the corner walls to the lid and ill be able to lift the substrate up out of the tub and i can put it on a table for harvesting, ill be able to come from the side with my shears and harvest in half the time. i also believe that it will make it easy to put into a garbage bag when that time comes around.
what do you think?

I am about to start my first bulk project, using Damien's tek myself, but looking over this post I have seen some ridiculous inspiration in chamber placement and design, I've heard of one other grow, first hand that had yields like this.
That grower who is a regular here, recommended not using coffee for my first bulk grow, and seeing these sulta I will stick to the standard, Damian tek.
In the future I would def be interested in messing around with coffee grinds.
Is there any specific way that you trigger pinning on the second and third flush?
