i cannot sleep at night
    #15781848 - 02/09/12 01:29 AM (1 year, 3 months ago)

no matter how tired i am during the day, once 9-10-11 pm rolls around, i completely lose any drowsiness i had and cannot sleep for the life of me.
i usually get up around 7-8 am for school. and i typically fall asleep around 2-3, and wake up several times, usually for good about 6. so maybe 4 hours tops, but it's also horrible quality. i am so exhausted in the morning. i'll get up, go to school/work. but come mid afternoon (3-4 pm), i am about falling asleep on my feet. i've been trying to go without any naps at all during the day, to make myself tired at night, but even without napping for a week at a time, i still am not tired at night. i'm going nuts. i've been trying OTC sleep aids, no luck. I had trazodone at one point, no luck. even my beloved benzos, which were the only thing that worked when i first started them, no longer help.
there is no way i can keep going and living productively with this sleep pattern. but i know napping during the day can only serve to make it worse at night.
help me shroomery

i feel you bro. i've been going through this for years, i am actually just starting to get better. i stopped drinking, smoking, all the drugs for awhile. even eating late at night i found prevents you from getting a better sleep. if you do any kind of drugs i would highly recommend you get off of them for a while until your sleep improves. dude if you wake up feeling like shit because of no sleep and then go to work and all that, when you come back and you feel like taking a nap, TAKE IT. i get better sleep from short naps than from long sleep. most of the times it is easy to fall asleep again at night even though i took a nap early in the day. check this out, there's is a trick to falling asleep easily, i will explain. when you are in your room or where ever in your house and you start to yawn. as soon as you get that first yawn, stop everything and just lay your ass down in a bed somewhere. doesn't matter if you haven't brushed your teeth or didn't get into your pajamas, ignore all that and just lay down on the bed and close your eyes. remember, right when you get that first yawn let go of everything and lay down as soon as possible. this works for me about 80 percent of the time, maybe more. definitely try it man.

I have sleep issues too and here is a natural method that what works pretty well for me.

Start getting up at 5:30 or 6:00 am every day. What happens to me is I do this and it makes me really really tired by the end of the day. You should go to bed in the evening then whenever you feel drowsy. Even if its 9 o clock. But remember to get up at 5:30 or 6:00 no matter what.

When you begin to feel drowsy make sure to turn the lights in the room very low and turn the TV volume down or off. Maybe set up a fan to create some white noise to block out any cars or unwanted interruptions through the night.

When you are feeling really drowsy turn off the lights and the TV.

Do not eat an hour before bed and do not exercise 2 hours before bed.

Think about relaxing an hour before bed. For example. If you listen to music then pick something that is down tempo and calming rather than metal. If you want to watch TV then watch something enjoyable rather than a horror movie that will get your heart racing.

One other thing that could be helpful is a journal. If you have problems on your mind then pick one up and write them down in the early evening. This will help you settle any conflicts in your head or at least sort things out.

ZZZzzzz....

These things help me. Good luck.

I too faced this same issue a couple years back, but I stopped using aspartame (diet soda) and I'm on the other end of the spectrum: damn near noddin out.  Feels good after a decade of the sporadic bouts of sleep I used to get.

I have been the same as this all my life, it was worse when I was in my teens; get home in middle of night after dropping off my girl, 2 hours of fretful sleep and then up for work at 5-am, by the weeks end I would be exhausted and then sleep all day Saturday, then Sunday night I wouldn't get a single wink,!  I eventually got a job down a coal mine working nights, strangely I could sleep for jesus down there? now its a bottle of wine at bedtime and I'm hooked for life it seems, and cant do without it.  I cant advice other than to say that a short nap in the afternoon is deadly and would make me stay awake all night.
