In case you want to consider some nice paid apps... (I like to support the devs for their time, like we do here with give-aways )
APP - > Purpose _________________ ES File Explorer -> Good for browsing network/bluetooth shares etc
As mentioned before, PowerAMP worth buying -> Music/podcast player
Unified Remote Full -> control your PC/media center from the phone (I LOVE this one)
MX Video Player Pro -> great hardware-accelerated video player, handles all the mkv, subtitles multiple audio track, web flv files etc
RealCalc -> Scientific Calculator
ELectroDroid -> Great electronics app if you that way inclined
iKamasutra -> self-explanatory but I like MMS'n positions to the girly for proposition/review hahaha makes it a 'try em all' game you tick off the list lol
AmbiSci Binaurals -> without the debate on 'does it work', I find it helps the relaxing/meditation. Poor-mans portable 'Monroe Institute' I guess
FREE _________ ChromeMarks -> See you google synced bookmarks
TubeX -> great to download youtube files easy in one-click

orbot (anon internet) I prefer battery doctor over the juice defender it has more options. It's got a task killer and thorough history clear built in.... it also has a battery charge history and heath. scandalous apps is a program permission watch dog is a good app and so is note cypher... a notepad with blowfish encryption. opera mini or mobile compress the data for people who pay for usage...

Im surprised nobody has mentioned Tasker. Tasker is great, its basically an app that lets you program your own tasks and settings and have them initiated based on certain input.
For example, I have a bluetooth dongle hooked up to my car and I have programed my phone to do a variety of things when it detects I am in the car. It turns off wifi, turns on gps, turns on car mode and whatever programs or music I want. I also use it to do simple things like silence my phone at time intervals that I choose. It reads my google calendar and automatically silences my phone during specific meetings and class, etc. I have quite a few tasks set up. Right now I am trying to set up a task that will sync my ebook library and bookmark across my devices. Havent been able to get it yet, but I still have some ideas. Its a great app, great for usefulness and then forget it or for playing around.
Another one I use a lot is Splashtop Remote Desktop. Particularly, the 'HD' version which is optimized for tablets. I have a tablet with keyboard and mouse. With splashtop I can use them seamlessly to operate my windows 7 machines. Some things you just cant do on android and sometimes you like to access your desktop. My experience with splashtop HD is almost as good as the built in windows remote desktop.
Last night I used remote desktop to tag some music up on my desktop, right now I was just using it to download stuff and load some books on my reader. The basic kind of stuff that I need to be able to do I am able to do on my tablet, from any internet connection. Its great!
I use XBMC to consume shows, movies and music at home. The remote app for android is real good. It operates via wifi so you can use it where ever. It has lots of functionality. You can operate a traditional remote style interface. You can operate a computer style slider and preview frame. You can also browse your library visually with the CD covers, TV and movie fan and studio art. Really cool!
