Do I need to quickly toss my agar if contaminates pop up?
    #15749194 - 02/01/12 08:48 PM (12 years, 2 months ago)

Do I need to quickly toss my agar if contaminates pop up? I know you should never open a contaminated agar plate in a flow hood but do I need to toss the agar plates that have trich. on them (1 of my plates has trich.) quickly, If they stay around is there a risk of the spores or whatever spreading or can you isolate away from trich. without spreading it? I know you can isolate away from contaminates but I was thinking trich. might be different since it seems to be the most prevalent.

Please and thanks

just curious

I haven't gotten into agar yet, but I believe one of it's advantages is you can isolate good myc from contams. However I'd think mean green would spread spores from a petri dish just as it would from a cake or tub. I'd toss it.

Good luck!

To keep an eye out for extremely rhizomorphic mycelium, I have 2 trays with 3 sample apiece so I wanted to possibly keep them so if i see some really good looking myc I wanted to isolate it onto another plate, I have a limited number of plates or else I would just toss it!

If the trichoderma has yet to sporulate, then you should be fine to transfer away from it into a new plate...

The spores of trichoderma are green... It's mycelium is a dense bright white.
