Border Patrol seizes 5,513 pounds of marijuana in N.M. and West Texas

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- U.S. Border Patrol agents in southern New Mexico seized more than 4,300 pounds of marijuana in two weekend busts, according to the agency.
The biggest seizure came Sunday on Interstate 25 near Las Cruces when agents noticed the nervous driver of a tractor-trailer gave inconsistent information about the cargo he was carrying.
Agents discovered among his cargo 33 boxes of marijuana in crates of green chile.
The driver, Martin Mendizile, 55, of El Paso Texas, was arrested and charged with criminal contraband smuggling.
A day earlier, Lordsburg agents found 900 pounds of marijuana in the back of a pickup truck tracked by an agency helicopter from the border to a national forest area. Agents stopped the truck after it pulled onto an Interstate 10.
The 18-year-old driver, Gabriel Galaz-Rivera, of Sonora, Mexico, was arrested.
The weekend seizures in New Mexico came as agents in West Texas hauled in more than 1,100 pounds of marijuana in their own seizure operations, according to the Border Patrol.
Two busts by agents in Fabens, Texas, recovered nearly 650 pounds of marijuana Friday and Saturday. Fort Hancock agents on Sunday found 505 pounds of marijuana in burlap bundles in a sport utility vehicle pulled over on Interstate 10.
The West Texas seizures resulted in two arrests, according to the Border Patrol.

what the hell does the U.S. government do with the thousands of pounds of marijuana it seizes every year? Perhaps sells it for off the books profit? It's not like they haven't done that before..
