Horrible Wooden Paneling; Apartment Help *Image Heavy*
    #15618530 - 01/05/12 03:19 AM (1 year, 4 months ago)

Hey all, just rented an apartment and unfortunately there's horrible really dark wood paneling all over the entire apartment. I actually lightened these photos considerably, that's how dark it is. I can't paint over it/put up wall paper as it's rented and I was maybe going to consider the fabric/starch method; however, seeing it's the whole darn house it just wouldn't work.

I kind of want to just work with the 70's feel since that's where it stems from but when I Google anything dealing with wood paneling the only hits I get are about changing/getting rid of it. If anyone has images or sites that show examples of working with the paneling and decor or personal tips on what would really make it pop it would be helpful.

I'm thinking maybe just going with a Victorian style theme and bringing in a lot of heavy fabric prints, curtains, curio shelves, and just general items of dark reds, maroons, purples, and navy couple with neutral? Also, any suggestions on a really good tutorial about reupholstering a couch... that reclines on the sides? On to pictures.

The kitchen actually doesn't look horrid.

I dunno, I think it looks pretty sharp already. I'd throw up a buffalo head and maybe one of those antler chandeliers and you could hang your shotgun up on the wall.

ya, you need a sheep-skin rug and a lava lamp. But of course, throw in a redneck yacht club sticker on the wall and you've got it made brother

Paint the paneling a light color, maybe a soft cream color with white trim would look nice.

So you didn't actually read his post before chiming in. Good for you.

Put down green carpet throughout the apartment. That would give you a good contrast with the walls. Then add red furniture and suddenly it will look a whole lot different.
Also get rid of the ceiling fan. It looks like shit.

I like that idea, I like it a lot. I'm not sure if I want a redneck paradise.

Green+Red take away the awfulness of brown panelling. Couldn't find a better picture to illustrate my point.

You also need bright lights.
