Sorry, I am late. The yellow spot could be a normal discoloration of the mycelium although I don't like it. Any update?

Only fashionably so!
No update on the yellow yet. I might go over and check up on things after work tonight. If I do I'll take a few pictures. \
Two nights ago, on 12/9, the majority of the mushrooms on two cakes were mature, veils tearing. It was the two cakes with the biggest mushrooms in the OP pictures. The one next to the thermometer and the one below and to the left of it. We harvested the mature mushrooms and they went straight into the dehydrator.
There were a few pins on these cakes with caps that were taking on a definite dark grey color and some that had bluish or green coloration. I considered the dark grayish ones aborts and removed them. The green/blue ones were left alone.
There was a remaining small group of pins on each cake that was left there during the subsequent dunk.
Just picked up a scale yesterday, the weight from the first two cakes will be in the next update
They seemed pretty average though. It's the other cakes with the whopping pin sets for which my expectations are held the highest. Haha.

I'm beyond flattered and thanks so much for taking the time to have a look at my thread! And thanks for the rating!
It's awesome having people to show our top secret project to and get feed back, and even cooler if any mistakes we make or places we succeed can help others starting out as well.
Haha, fruity pictures will be up soon, hopefully at least! I would think almost all the cakes should be getting their high school diplomas in the next day or two.

This has been an excellent read, and I admire your work, sir.
I'll most likely try this heat shock method.
I have compiled information in a similar if less concise manner. Example: I used pint jars instead of half pints
I do have a question: What does one do between flushes? After a cake is dunked and rolled (or heat shocked then rolled as in your case) are you ready to go, or must you add a new layer of verm between flushes?

Thank you sir!
I believe most people do not roll between flushes, as it traps new contaminants under the vermiculite. I've also read of people doing it and having no problem though. I think RR advocates only dunking between flushes, I'd have to search to be 100% though.
I did not roll a second time after I dunked. Nor did I remake a vermiculite reservoir on the top or bottom (known as "double ending").
Thanks again and good luck!

So you dunk and rolled once, and after that began to harvest away?

Right. As I understand it you only roll once. However, you dunk between every flush.
Update with pics in OP.

Your fruits didn't have enough water. That's why they are so tiny. This is pretty common with heatshocked cakes. When mushrooms do not have enough water to support growth, they simply stop growing and start opening their caps in order to disperse spores. I suggest you to re-dunk the cakes when pins have appeared (12 hours is usually enough but you can also try 18-20 hours). This way your mushrooms will be bigger and healthier. Massive pinsets require plenty of water.

Yikes! They didn't appear dry so I thought I was in the clear. That makes a lot of sense though. We'll definitely redunk after pins appear in the future. Ten more heat shocked cakes on the way to try that with, and the big pin set cakes only have a few opening caps, the rest are hanging on and growing a bit more luckily. Talk about a learning experience!
Thanks for the advice, as always!
