Anyone else find the bands and songs you listen to kinda get old after a while?
    #15379002 - 11/16/11 10:57 AM (6 months, 6 days ago)

So I'm sitting here processing a bunch of photos, and I like to listen to music while I do it...  TV is too distracting when I'm doing photos or homework, but I've just listened to all the music I have SO many times over the years. I've listened to a lot of the same bands for 10 or 15 years and own their entire catalogs and have heard all the songs a million times.  I have over 100 vinyl LP's and an entire 100GB hard drive full of music, over 10,000 songs, and even with such a huge pile, I just look at it sometimes and think "blah..."

I have a hard time discovering new music.  Pandora literally plays artists and songs I already have, I hardly ever hear anything new.  I'm a pretty big punk-rock snobby elitist (at least that's what my fiance says)...  Once in a while I'll be a little more diverse in my tastes, but I like what I like and there's really no helping that.  Most music coming out related to the punk genre tends to be emo, which I hate, and/or some offshoot of metal (I don't like screaming vocals, the closest thing to screaming I like is The Casualties.  I like to be able to understand the lyrics).  A lot of my friends have crossed over to listening to metal, but I still like straight-ahead punk.  I used to XM Radio before they merged with Sirius; Fungus was fantastic, Lou Brutus had really good taste and played some really different stuff.  The merger with Sirius saw the demise of Fungus, and all the punk channels they offer now are garbage (at least last time I looked).  I've been to/go to A LOT of shows and will occasionally get to see a really good supporting band, but I have to drive 1-1/2 hours (Pittsburgh) to get to them, so it tends to need lots of planning, time, and money.  Plus, for the longest time, Pittsburgh didn't have a venue that was the right size for most punk shows.

It really is frustrating...  I do a lot of things where I like to listen to music at the same time, but after the millionth time, it just starts getting boring.

That's very true, they wrote so much material how could you not find something by them to listen to? Same goes for Floyd and Zeppelin.

At 30, you would expect that I would've found something different from my typical niche, but I really haven't... Commercial radio RUINED most classic rock for me, that and country are the only formats around here. I like some Stones, and some lesser known things like T. Rex or The Stooges or the MC5, that sort of music has been interesting me more and more lately... Hope to find some good stuff in that genre.

Like they said in Pulp Fiction, theres 2 kinds of people in this world, Beatles people and Elvis people... I'm an Elvis person. I like striped down 50s and 60s rock n' roll and rockabilly more than the 60 hippieish stuff and arena rock.

Turn your radio off.

There is a lot of good Classic Rock, Zep, Stones, Cream, AC/DC, but there is also a lot of bad music they call "classic", like, journey, foreigner, styx...

You are about my age, we grew up in a great time for DIY music, and there are ALOT of bands from the 90s to the early 00s and now, that are worth your time.

Have you heard of At The Drive In? Another band to follow up with is The Mars Volta. Those are two bands that are fairly well known, and come from the punk scene, despite NOT being punk.

The other direction you can go is backwards in time, and see how far stripped down you can get the music before it's unrecognizable.

Somewhere along the line, I got to see At The Drive In...  I don't remember when and I don't remember who they were supporting, but they put on a good live performance. Honestly one of those bands on the long list of bands I've forgotten over the years.

I've been hittin' up the music the mid 90's alot more lately, again, and it all sort of stemmed from music that I like.  I forgot about a lot of it over the years, but much of it was just good rock music.  Early Chili Peppers, Soundgarden (one of the best from that whole bunch, IMO), White Zombie, Nirvana, Hole, I've forgotten so many but I've been trying to get back into it more.  L7 is one of my fav's, but they really got inadvertently lumped into grunge, they always were more punk-leaning.  I've been meaning to start checking out the sub-mainstream work of that era. There was alot of good stuff back then, I just got away from it.

I just have a hard time with classic rock...  I used to not, but over time it just started to drive me crazy.

L7 are class!

I'm in a bit of the same predicament myself. I know what elements I like in music (across any genre) and tend to stick to those 'boundaries'.

Mainly been getting away from electronica recently though for bands like L7, Blind Melon and the Shoegazer genre, that type of thing. They are really just throwbacks to distant memories of hearing them when I was a young'un though.

Gang of Four and Mission of Burma are good punk. Very well structured.

Senser are also a great band too.

Not a lot to say really, but I thought I'd post

Everything gets old eventually.

I've dedicated a few years to finding new music, so I'd like to share some helpful tips here...
:catman:

1) It's just music. Don't base your happiness on anything external.

2) Punk has only been around so many years ... eventually you'll have
heard most everything that's been done and will then be greedily
lapping at the spigot of new bands coming through the pipeline.

Tips on finding new music?

~ Look up a favorite album, who was the producer? What else has he done?

~ What record labels are your favorite bands on? What other bands on there?

~ Solo works of all the members of long running bands?

~ What compilations are they on and who else is on that comp?

Discogs will set you free. See that area on the left, midpage? 'Collaborations', 'Remixes', 'Production Work', =  New music for days.

Also, I can't tell you the effect file sharing, blogs and private trackers have had on me.
Just looking at the hands of people uploading my favorite content. Or the blog containing my favorite album.
They liked / know about this rare album? What else do they like?
Limewire was good like that as well. Back in the day.

You don't even have to download anything.

Some people have really good taste similar to yours. Find one and pick his mind for all it's worth! Pay him, if needed.
Share your knowledge with people in return. Before the internet I had a record collector buddy named Robert.
Like a walking encyclopedia, that guy. I'd bring a bag and spend the night making mixtapes of
his collection until he went to work the next day. Share libraries and knowledge.

It's one of the best uses of the internet, as you already know.

If you get on a good private (or semi- public) tracker in a foreign country and you'll discover a whole, rich, insanely bad ass world of music
that's completely overlooked in the US. Whole genres that you may not have known existed. If you don't mind lyrics in French or German...
I listen to classical, progressive RIO and 'IDM' so...no worries for me.

Of course, you can always visit the library and read a few books on the genre of your choice.
Resident Advisor and Pitchfork reviews, I'm sure there's a Punk Webzine  around here somewhere...

Don't turn off the radio!!!!

Freeform radio. It's nothing like that
loop of stale bullshit and advertising that makes up 99% of radio
stations nowadays. Isn't it funny, even when they have supposedly
'Freeform Fridays' on those stations...they play the same fucking songs!?

Radio DJ: Yes, caller, what's your request for freeform friday?
Caller: Can you play AC/DC 'Highway to Hell'?
Radio DJ: Well, since it's already in the fuckin machine from an hour ago, why not...

Google Chrome has a translate add-on, so you can visit whatever, all over the world. Alpine Disco Radio. Barcelona Oldies. Use your imagination.
http://www.volksmusiknet.ch/modules/mod_miniradio/player.php ( takes a few seconds)
And, many radio stations have end-of-the-year DJ 'favorites list'.
Here's one:
http://kexp.org/programming/djtop10.asp

KALX, WFMU, Pirate Radio, College Radio, Etc.
Radio is alive and well....online!

Enter a few select keywords into Listmania, Music Maps, Amazon, um, Google?
The keywords: 'Best (Genre) Albums of the Decade List' have served me very well.

Finding new, good music is really only limited to your imagination!

Isn't that the beauty of the internet? If you can think it, it exists somewhere on here.
Just a matter of thinking and being creative with your mind and keywords. Etc.

P.S.
I was tempted not to share my humble ideas here ...because musical snobs and
elitists really turn me off. So please, don't be one of those rude dildos
who bashes people over the head with their musical knowledge...or shits
on kids who haven't heard the same music you have. Receive / give.

That's some good advice!

That made me remember how I found new music when I was younger, before the internet really took a foothold.  I used to look through magazines for bands I already liked and see what groups were on the t-shirts they were wearing.  That actually worked really well for me for a lot of years.  I used to love compilation albums, they used to be like $5 (I haven't bought one in a long time), so even if you only liked a couple songs they were worth it.  The college radio here DOES play some good stuff, but really there's no rhyme or reason behind their programming, it's just sort of the luck of the draw what you'll hear when you tune in.  I was on mailing lists for all the record labels and got their catalogs.  I think the internet has made me lazy.

I used to like AC/DC... Not love, but like.  But when XM cancelled my beloved Fungus, they replaced it with 24/7 AC/DC and I swore out a vendetta.  Really, how many times do you need to hear Back In Black in a 24 hour period?!

I swear to God, my next post after this will be two sentences.
:albundy:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

T-shirts, interesting. I never even thought of that. The ritual or  practice of promoting other bands through t-shirts
worn during photo ops. Good call. It's true. And I wondered why I felt so weird when I saw a friend, a few years ago,
wearing a t-shirt of his own band.

It just seemed odd at the time.
But, I couldn't put my finger on it.
He wasn't following the polite cultural norm.

As far as finding music, or finding a station, you have to find the
particular DJ or other human that you like. Someone who wrote a list
online and whose taste you agree with, or a blog, or does a radio show. More on that later.

Because overall, music is about collecting...and selecting.

1) Collecting. Going through the vast database that is human musical expression, one at a time, is undoable. You'd never catch up, what with the new stuff being produced. So, most start by trawling the years of someone else's listening experience. All those years that have produced, hopefully, a few hours of really top shelf tracks. Those people that you hit up for 'jewels' have, in turn, done the same to those before them. (of course, there's no accounting for taste...so it's not an orderly progression up. And no one is keeping track. Libraries die. Playlists get lost.) 'Collecting' is work. Curating is work. It's cratedigging for days. It's hours of really shitty music to find one song. It's missed rounds at the bar. It's friendships that die off from neglect, and physical corruption of your body. Your posture, your wrist and shoulder joints, your mind --->Read: 'The Shallows' by Nicholas Carr, esp Chapter 7, your kidneys from all the coffee and energy drinks that keep you glued to the waterfall of endless music files. All for the benefit of your library. The curator's blues.

It's really just a matter how perfect you want your collection. At what point do you give up.

2) Selecta! Next is looking inside yourself and finding out what kind of music would accentuate the mood you desire at any given moment. You've internalized all those hours of listening to other people's stuff and things you found on your own.  Hopefully, you've exposed yourself to choice selections by other people with similar, discerning tastes, right?  Maybe you've distilled your own concentrate from a huge collection? Or planned ahead for a certain mood you knew you'd be in. Got your playlist ready! Either way, at some point you'll need to be able to choose (and find in your database) the perfect song for the moment. Or the nearest thing. 'Perfect' is always subjective and debatable. But, it can be fun. Personally, I'm working on distilling my 6 TBs into about 100 albums that fit every mood. One external HHD just failed, again! So there went priceless months of my life. Sadness.

Discogs, DJ Lists, Sharity Blog Posts, Listmania, Etc, just help narrow the
sample of what you'll have to further filter with your own approval.
Having such a massive library is like running a radio station. It's
very awkward to transition from the PC to the meager Data Disc or
Cd. They need a good 'middle gizmo' between those extremes, right?
Something that can handle a few GBs, but is handheld... with good
speakers, so you can take a good sized chuck of your collection
out into the woods and stuff. Then again, Nature's Soundtrack...

As far as the collection angle of the music experience:
Are you limiting yourself to the radio station near your house?
Jesus Christ, Don't. You have the world's radio stations at your feet!

Google Translate Add-On
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/aapbdbdomjkkjkaonfhkkikfgjllcleb

A Radio Locator Service
http://radio-locator.com/

Freeform aside, American radio is sad. The BBC has been kicking our ass for years.
Ever heard of DJ Kicks? Late Night Tales? Etc? The BBC has a long history of
radio shows (like those 'mixtape collections') hosted by musicians and celebrities
spinning their favorite selections. Usually, with a very few promo cuts of recently
released stuff to pay the bills.

For instance, I never miss Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service:

BBC
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00ptsjd/episodes/2011

Archive
http://editthis.info/cockers_sunday_service_archive/Main_Page

BBC Essential Mixes are archived somewhere. All of 'em!
Bob Dylans Theme Time if you're into that type of thing. I just like his voice.

So, yes, sometimes the DJs will only be on at a certain
hour of local radio shows. And it's hit or miss as you said.
But, there's other web stations and archives that keep downloadable
files, if you find a 'DJ' with similar tastes, download the show.
Ask for a playlist.

Here's one I sometimes listen to, just recently got busted by the FCC, now on web only format:
http://www.kaosradioaustin.org/
Listening to Pinata Party now, it's like listening to some of my own files. from 6 or 7 years ago.
Funny, I jest noticed the 'Erroneous O'Shaughnessy Experience' has the Rectal Smegma 'Keep On Smiling' Album Cover. heh.

Aside from collecting, selecting the right song depends on the time
of day and situation, and your ability to remember all the stuff
you have. I'd like to identify 5 or 6 main music listening activities
and narrow down my collection to a Best of List for each.
If at all possible.

For instance:

First cup of coffee? This album:

I know, I like Zorn, too.

Coming down at the end of the day? This album is perfecto! The best I've found:

In a car touring overpasses downtown?

On a lonely stretch of West Texas Desert at 4 Am?

Taking the kids to school?

Sometimes I want exercise music. 140 BPM, driving beats, no beat variation. Either Uplifting or No lyrics for cardio. Aggressive stuff for weights. Or drone to relax and drown out the kiddos nextdoor screamin and carrying on. Etc. I want a song.. a soundtrack for every single instant in life. But it's a lifetime goal.

:musicnote:  :bananamusic:
Music for when I'm in the bath, music for when I'm doing math.

Music for every mood. (and silence is nice, too) But, I guess I'll
settle for 6 or 7 or 18 genres  for 6 or 7 or 18 moods I usually encounter.

So...after all this...how are ya coming up short to find good music?
Or if, you just kinda want to have a conversation about music?
But yeah, take a 'Wiki Walk'. Start on a page of a band you like...
and start clicking hotlinks. Search Youtube to preview.

But, again, maybe you've reached 'the pinnacle'. ( a pinnacle?) It's totally possible.
Maybe it's time to turn around and 'be the sugar', not taste it.
Go and share all that knowledge. Start a blog or something?
Respond to people's questions on forums.

And, if you still can't find anyone, at all, making that special sound you crave...
it's time to pick up an instrument and get your friends to do the same.

Either that, or give up music for a while. It's only music. You'll
appreciate it more after a media fast of a day or two. Trust me.
Went camping once, no music for a month!, totally cried to Melloncamp's 'Pink Houses' on the way back to town.
lewlz.

Anyways, after dedicating a chuck of my life to collecting music, I realize,
it can be just another distraction from the more important work of self discovery.
It can become like a 'shopping addiction' or something, coupled with 'internet addiction' and topped off with a heaping spoonful of 'coffee addiction'.

I like this picture. Kinda funny. I can totally relate, that was me 3 years ago.
http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1R4dCyJfKp8/SHKepGMatII/AAAAAAAAAFI/HEmxwDrvnvc/s1600/end%2Bup%2Balone.jpg

So, blahblahblah, to me it's not the end goal. Always collecting.  never sharing. Always getting. Never having. It can become pure greed.
I've personally seen that in myself. Music like mushrooms, a tool that can help other, more essential, processes take place.
Also something people get spun out on 'mistaking the finger for the moon'...but, there's an art to collecting and
selecting. Tips, tools, tricks, standing on the shoulders of midgets, just won't do.

Boil down you library into a 200 album 'essence' and then go have fun doing other things.

Goddamn, I need to spend my caffeinated mid afternoon boosts more
wisely! I'm coming down and all i have to show for it is this post.
Ah well, maybe someone got something out of all that.

And it was fun writing anyways, so...no big deal.

Time to go enjoy my Friday night!
Have fun.

:peace:
