 Pacific Crest Trail

Anyone have any experience hiking this trail? Basically runs the entire coast starting around San Diego and runs up to Canada.
I dont have the skills to do the whole thing but I am thinking of doing the Oregon portion here after the 1st of January

Never hiked it, but thought about it.

Actually I hadnt found that yet. I am still doing little things like, fixing my tent and modifying my backpack to carry it. Also putting together essential kits in little wet-proof containers.

Isn't it though? I've hiked pieces of the PCT down here in California.
All I know is that you can camp anywhere along the trail. Pretty nice.
I dream of one day hiking a big portion of it-- at least through California.

Wow, that website is really cool. I'm going to have to hike the trail just so that I can use it.
I would love to do at least part of that hike though, maybe this summer or next summer (after graduation).

I really want to do the area up around Crater Lake.
I mapped it out and there is a 130-150 mile portion I feel I would really enjoy and could physically handle.

I've hiked a portion of it from Mt. Baker to Ross Lake area, it was beautiful and well maintained from my observations. A tip for waterproofing: use a hefty bag as a waterproofing layer in your pack. It'll save you from overpriced dry sacks that don't even work that well.

I did a small part called the West Coast Trail it around Vancouver, BC. It's like a tropical rainforest, only more northern. Very humid and smells really nice.

I did the West Coast Trail too, it is not apart of the Pacific Crest Trail though.

Yeah, I did most of the Washington section of the PCT in 2009. Marvelous. I will never forget the cascade range. Just don't go to that part in July unless you want to get your ass handed to you by mosquitos.

I am a Trailcrew Leader and my crew as well as at least 4 or 5 other crews spent multiple weeks this summer repairing various sections of the general 150 miles yo mentioned. The trails lookin pretty good, and only will get worse .. ( :

In january? You know it runs through the Cascades aka frigid snowy montains at high elevation for a lot of OR right? Theres plenty of parts that will have some serious snow right now? Sorry for ranting if you know all this and are prepared with the right gear, but i sure wouldn't do it.

That's awesome man. I'm getting my application together for Maine Conservation Corps, Trail Academy. If I get in (no idea how likely this is) and graduate I should be working as a team leader. You enjoy it I take?

Very much. I worked my way up from one of the grunts to staff only recently, and it's awesome. It's a pretty tough job at times mentally and physically. The work is incredible either way, but the freedom of being the leader/assistant leader rules. I know someone who worked for Maine this may. I've heard good things about the organization.

I've done portions of the PCT in the Sierra Nevada mountains on a couple different backpacking trips. I entered at different locations both times but exited over Mount Whitney on both occasions. The high Sierras are impressive! Walking through a pass at 13,000 ft with a higher peak on both sides of you is pretty awesome. We hiked and camped at over 10,000 feet for over a week straight one time.
Me and my buddy on Mount Whitney; 14,496 feet above sea level. Highest point in the contiguous 48 US States.

Yeah, that view is looking North from the summit. On this particular trip we hiked through/over several of those mountains you see behind us. This was the last day of a 2 week trip. About 130 miles I think on this one, the bulk of which followed a portion of the PCT from North to South.

Im planning on doing am epic trip from Baja California Sur (La Paz?) to Alaska (Nome?) oneday
For the US portion I want to do the PCT though.

You might also consider doing parts of the CCT (California Coastal Trail). It runs from Mexico to Oregon.
Not sure when you'd head westward (probably around Redding?). Just an idea though-- in case you didn't know about the CCT.
