REVISED IDEAS:
The ability to search the user galleries via tags to the images. This will include an UNIDENTIFIED or UNSURE tag, incase the uploader has not properly ID'd the mushroom species of an image, so people are aware it might not be right.
This would allow people to search for images of the mushroom they are trying to ID before posting. If you have tried to use the forums to search for images you already know it's pretty much wading through a bunch of junk posts with deleted images as well as blurry photos, and takes a long time just to find a single image. This I think should be fixed.
Organizing galleries: The galleries right now are browsable only in alphabetical order, there should be other ways to organize this, whether by popularity, number of galleries/images, or other, this should also be addressed.
Comments box: Allow people to leave comments.
I'll post more ideas here as they come up.

This will require a reworking of the gallery script. Right now the table design for the gallery database is not optimal for sorting by count. I may be able to combine this request with the earlier request for subfolder support, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to get to it. I'll do my best not to let it slip through the cracks though.

Another idea! Searching the user galleries for things would be awesome. We could search for contaminants instead of sifting through 500 threads for decent images.
Or search for mycelium pics to identify etc.

Maverick, if you're just wanting to troll through some decent galleries and aren't looking for something in specific:
Go to the "user list" option. Just beneath the search field, there is a link for "advanced search", use it. Once in there, click the boxes for all of the "status" profiles (like Trusted Cultivator, etc.) that you want included.
Now you have a reasonable list of galleries to peruse. It may not get you exactly what you're after, but it does a most excellent job of limiting the crap.

It's just irking me that when I try to find an image of a contaminant, I have to wait through about 100+ posts before I find an image, and even then, usually the image sucks and I have to search through more and more posts. I'd prefer a search feature over being able to align by amount of images.

Here's an example of why searching the forums for pictures is useless, and why a search feature for the galleries is gonna be awesomesauce.

The main problem is you go search for something like PE6, and you find a link with photos, except all the photos have been deleted by the person, so, you're searching through dozens upon dozens of old posts for a single picture, and 75% of the time you run into this.

One more suggestion, ask the board if somebody has a picture of what you're looking for. Yes, we fling poo at those who don't know how to search, but I'm fairly confident you've at least given it a real chance before asking.
What are you looking for?
Btw, don't fling poo. As satisfying as it may seem at the time, you're just wasting valuable substrate. Keep you poo to yourself.

Oh it's a daily occurance, from searching for petri dish pictures, to different edible species, to different contaminants, I'm always trying to compare what I am growing to what's been grown to make sure I'm doing it right.

you can pick and choose what you share. a lot of my folders are set to private and there are some where only some of the individual pictures are not shared but the folder is.

Well for the shared images, can we have a tag search? Like, when you share the images you can add tags to them, so that way they are easily findable with an image search feature?
For example sometimes I'll want to show someone an example of a simple fruiting chamber or a complex one, to do this I either have to use my own (and i have no more pics of a simple FC), or browse through tons of threads, scrolling and looking for a suitable image. It would be much simpler to just type in "fruit chamber" or "fc" and hit enter with "images" selected in search option. It would make it easier to find everything, even species of mushrooms, to help identify with and such.
And the private images of course aren't shared.

I love this idea. Add tagging to images (like on flickr for example) and then you could search by tag. Hopefully it isn't all that complicated to implement something like that.
