Help ID lib caps
    #15231506 - 10/15/11 10:10 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hey, so this is my first attempt at hunting for mushrooms. Ive done a decent amount of reading on identifying shrooms in my area. However I would of course still like a 2nd opinion on this. So here goes.

These are all what I believe to be liberty caps (1).

Habitat: Short and tall grass. There was dog shit periodicly around the area.

Gills: The gill color is white. They are adnate gills (as far as my newbie eyes can tell)

Stem: A tan to brownish color light colored, pretty fragile, same width all the way down.

Cap: Whiteish/tan on the top. some with a brown ring around the edges, smooth, not hygrophanous (I think), 1-3cm in diameter

Spore print color: spore print in progress

Bruising: No color change was observed.

Location: Picked in the Pacific northwest, washington state

The mushroom on top is what I believe to be a liberty cap (1). The one below it is what I believe to a be a look alike (2). I just want to make sure that the bottom one is infact, not a liberty cap.

The main differences of 2 is that the cap is kind of wrinkly looking. The cap is also much darker brown then 1. The stem looks fairly identical however.

This last picture im quite sure is not a liberty cap. But I was hoping someone could tell me what it is as i found a large abundance of them near by.

Habitat: short damp grass. It was kind of swampy almost with a small puddle of water nearby.

Gills: The gill color is a whiteish brown. Annexed gills (I think)

Stem: Whitish grey, sturdy, slightly enlarged at base. 2cm wide.

Cap: A darkish brown, smooth, not hygrophanous (I think), 1-2 inches in diameter.

Spore print color: A light brown

Bruising: A darkish mark of brown

Location: Picked in the pacific northwest, washington state

Ok so obviously I know you all need a sporeprint but as I said they are in progress and i will update when they are done. If anyone could help speculate without that info that would be greatly appreciated. Any other information you might require just ask. And please be as noob friendly as possible please! Thanks in advance

liberties will never have white gills, unless you find some albinos. they usually don't just grow in grass, but grasses associated with past or present livestock use.

photobucket is what I use...  I have no problem with size...

click/copy  the IMG code  or the Direct Link code  in your photobucket album photo...

then paste that code into your message.   done!

Enlarged the pictures as requested. Also as it was commented that the white grills means its a no perhaps saying it was a pure white was a bit foolish. its a more tanish color, matching the rest of the cap and the stem. Ive updated picture 3's spore sprint however i messed up on the 1'st one so its still in progress. updated original post with info.

3 looks like an inocybe. Libs are found in tall grass on grazing lands. There are a lot of photos of libs on here if you look. If you're unsure if you found libs you can try peeling the top layer of skin off the cap.

A gelatinous pellicle is one of the characteristics which, when combined with a few others, will help you identify liberty caps. When wet you can actually peel the pellicle (a thin transparent film on the cap surface) off in a layer.

Do a spore print

Looking for purplish spores

Those will not have them...
