Can you prep rye grain in a washing machine?

And yes, I got this idea after watching people make hash in a washing machine.
Idea is super simple:
- Put the rye in a mesh bag - Wash the bag
Granted, the washer will probably take longer, but it will probably do a better job and make less of a mess - plus you can do other stuff while it washes.
I'd gonna do some R&D - anyone know a good type of bag for this? I know they make special hash bags, but I'm looking for something thats cheaper and I can get locally.

So you want to waste more water, add more chemicals to the earth, take more steps & spend more time on rinsing grains?
No. Just rinse & soak for 4-24 hours & boil for 10-30 after the soak.
& how do you figure "less of a mess"? There's no mess w/ rye grains. I, literally, get 100% of my kernels in the pot to boil & in my jars to PC.

Tried hand washing with a pillow case and it looks the the rye comes clean (I was afraid that the pillow case might trap the dirt) Trying to wash a pillow case full right now, so we'll see how it turns out in 55 minutes.
This might be a sweet way to do large scale prep - load up some sacks, fill the washer, let set 24 hours and wash.

Why would you need to prep that much grain? Do you have the sterilizer or PC space to sterilize it all in a 24 hour period?
It's just not worth it & the washing machine would beat the shit outta the grains causing them to burst.

Would it use more water? A washing machine fills up and rinses, hand washing you run water the whole time. Besides, 'wasting water' isn't really possible, since I have a well.

lol, you don't use soap

More steps, hopefully not less time.
I get rye all through my sink when I wash it, because some rye always floats. I need to get a garbage disposal.
I just hate doing shit by hand. I want some factory-type shit - something I can put water, rye and bags into and pull perfectly steamed, filled bags out of. I don't care if it leaks oil and runs on straight coal, I just want it to speed up this ridiculously tedious work!

It's actually good for about three+ days after the first prep step. It gets boiled and PC'ed after, so it has to really spoil to be ruined.

=/ You might be right. Guess we'll see how this turns out - might need to drop it to 'dedicates' or something too.

I don't know. Wouldn't all the tumbling damage the grains?

I think you need a better strainer bigger pot. I can do 20 quart jars of rye in my pot & two strainers.

OP, this is how i wash my rye berries:
pour rye berries into a 5 gallon bucket, 1/3 full. add hot water until its 4 inches or so over the top of the berries. the more water, the more shit comes off with each rinse.
so, you have a bucket with rye berries and hot water. take a drill with a paint stirrer attachment and stir up your bucket(s) full of rye berries. make sure to do this pretty thoroughly . then pour out the water, and repeat until youre pouring out clear water.
when you pour out clear water, fill it back up (not the entire 5 gallon bucket) with fresh water, and let it soak for 12-24 hours.
thats the easiest way i found to do it. and i was doing five 5 gallon buckets at once. i did enough rye berries for 20 tubs...
if anyone has an easier method, let me know.

It works in a pillow case!
Really well too - did it on the heaviest setting and it didn't break the kernels.
If you had a big enough bag(s), I'm guessing you could do 10-20 gallons pretty easy.

Why does anyone need that much grain spawn?
Also, I use gypsum in my soak. I think something revolving @ that speed would wash all the gypsum off.

Figure 5 gallons does about 7-10 bags. So 20 gallons is, at most 30-40 bags. Out of that, you might get 25 fully colonized. If you use those for coir trays, you might get 10 trays.
10 trays is, at most, 10 dry pounds, which isn't all that much really.

5 gallons = 20 quarts/6 = 3 bags w/ 2 quarts left over.
1 bag = 6 quarts. An AA75X can fit 5 bags, now if you have two AA's then: 5x2x6= 60 quarts / 4 = 15 gallons of hydrated grains. 1 bag per mono. That's 10 mono tubs @ once. You should be getting around 9-12 oz first flush & 3-4 oz second flush. IDK where you're getting that large of a failure ratio, but if you really are, you might want to reexamine you're procedures.
I still see no need to do that much grain spawn at once, unless you have the room to PC it all within 24 hours.
Furthermore, I use liquid coffee in my soak.
