IR mats for stealth weed grow?

a buddy told me about IR mats, but i googled them, and came up with no results. we were discussing ways to avoid the helicopters, now that I didn't find anything on google, I'm starting to think their is no way to avoid police detection via helicopter. a friend wants to start a medium size grow in his home is why I'm asking.

Maybe someone can correct me but my impression is that IR imaging can not be used to see through walls but rather to see warm surfaces on the outside of the house, for example an unusually warm roof from an attic grow. I believe the solution is getting rid of waste heat in ways that don't warm the outside of the house in suspicious looking patterns. In many places a search warrant is needed to perform such scans but obviously such rules don't really protect you very much.
