Ontario Active Gyms Found (feel free to share any active ontario finds)

Well its now the fall of 2011 and ive got one spring and summer under my belt for mushroom hunting (may not sound like much time but i have had an interest in our divine friends since indulging regularily back in high school (5+ yrs ago was the real hay day lol) and ive dedicated my current human experience (yeah ive had a pretty drastic spiritual awakening stemming from a great trip a little over a year ago) to serving creation to the best of my ability and to also have a little enjoyment for my ego as well).......

anyways i wanted to post some pics of active gyms ive found (tested myself, first time 10g dried, second time which was 1 month later was 12g dried)

first trip was very enlightening (fasted from breakfast onward - both food and ganja- then hit the volcano real hard a little over an hour into the trip.....this sent me into a very "understanding" kind of place.....nice visuals, nicer connection of metaphysical concepts and the human experience)

second trip wasnt as intense but there were some unexpected stimuli during the second experience which proved to be distracting....

personally i would like to try 20+ dried g next time to get more of an experience (i experimented with large amounts of much more active varieties back in the day and my understanding of fear allows for experiences to unfold as they should....so id like to really see what these gyms have to offer)

well this is my first post here (although i have used this site often for insight on IDing and hunting) so i hope i havnt broken too many of the rules ive read of........really i am making this post for connection with other like minded individuals, and also to help any other ontario gym hunters with the pics im gunna try to attach to this.........

one last thing........i am certain that there are more active varities around here (im sitting between ottawa and kingston ontario) from the reading ive done and was opening the floor to anyone who would like to share some of their own active finds or even just insight for ontario residents.....im still on the lookout for gyms but now am setting the eyes on potential psilocybes ive been reading about.............thanks for any input shroomery folks

I used top live in Ottawa and hunted extensively in your area. Gyms are probably your best bet this time of year as Panaeolus cinctulus (olivaceus, castaneifolius) are found in summer and psilocybe caerulipes can also be found late summer.

Check my thread here...
http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13275098/page/3

about where to find Liberty Caps, if they exist in Ontario, you'll read about my history with hunting them in that thread. It includes habitat shots etc. Which is a lot more than I knew years ago when I lived there. Would be excellent to have a confirmed Liberty Cap find in Ontario.

There are others but perhaps start with that. Gyms can also vary greatly in potency, I have a lot of experience with them and have had some very good experiences with them.

Good luck and happy hunting!

RIP Matt, your friendship and your contributions to the world of fungi will be missed. Unfortunately we never got to hunt together.

cool thanks for the reply.....I do recognize your "handle" StInvetroThomas from past readings here on shroomery and i remember seeing that you were from ottawa (which helped boost the old belief system before heading out for hunts where i am....that is knowing that there were actives around here)....

im gunna check out your thread after replying here as a few things came to mind from your post....firstly the notion of liberty caps being around here has been something that has stuck in my mind for the last couple of years (it wasnt until this summer that ive had the time to be able to get out for some quality time in nature...mostly just the odd reading prior to this year) and this "sticking" was without any real evidence of sorts...just an uneducated intuitive kinda thing so this intrigues me that u mention this variety...

as far as my experience with gyms in this area ive found some sapineus (which at the time i had  hoped were small, active spectabilis that bruised dark brown to black....wishful thinking as i gave em a try to no avail....im sure there was some good natural nutrition in there though...ill post some pics to this thread of them for interest sake) which fruited in a couple different locations....

then ive found the gyms which i have posted above here.....the interesting thing about these finds (which all occured late august onward) is that in mid may i had found some very large gym specs which were vibrant orange in colour but at this time i was still new to the game so decided to leave these 3 giants to drop spores for future fruiting (i also foolishly, as we see so prevelant in our world today, tried to impart my will on nature and moved the small log these were growing out of and placed the caps in different locations.....something i regretted later on as i realize i likly gave the mycellium a good disturbing)......well late august came and i made my first ID of what i was sure to be an active gym variety (later on tested to be true)...within the next couple of weeks i had found 4 more spots fruiting with these same gyms (only one spot proved to have any large numbers) and the interesting thing is that the spot where i found the vibrant orange gyms in may were now fruiting with the same, dull capped active gyms i had been finding in late summer.....makes me wonder if they were indeed the same variety and that season has an influence on cap colour (stems were very similar in colour)?

had u been able to find different varieties of gyms around the ottawa area? or just varying potency of gyms similar looking to the pics ive posted above?......i guess im still hoping to find some gyms of greater potency and didnt know if it were up to chance in the ones ive found or if there were more potent varieties around?

alright one last question before i get some pics up here and check your thread.....we had a light frost and cold rains about a week ago and now for the past few days its been 20+ degrees out (dipping below 10 at night), very clear dry days, foggy mornings, and now in a couple days the weather is supposed to stay quite warm with lots of rain......didnt know if these conditions could get some late blooming pans up?....i have no experience with finding pans but have done lots of reading and have some good resources.....i normally stick to hardwood forests around my place for my gym hunts and havnt really spent much time in cow pastures or at the edges of field/forest interface.....seeing on how at this time of year you say gyms are my best bet, i guess sticking to hardwood forests would be a good idea? (all of the active fruting spots ive found were in hardwood areas but all not too far from some evergreen patches)......well thats it for now....thanks for any potential input

oh they are indeed pleasent on the eyes

and yes there was some brusing present.....in some pins i had found there was a dark blue to an almost blackish brusing.....in slightly older specimens there was some noticeable blue/green tinge to the stretching, ready to be torn veil.......in some other young specimens there were dark blusish bruises (not overly noticable).....and in some of these puppies there were very dark, almost blackish bruising in the stems once dried........i had also found one little fella growing out of a small hole in a log that decided to become thicker than the hole itself so i did some jimmying and gotter out in tact but put a good squueze on'er....within a few hours of drying, the stem completely turned black which i thought was quite interesting (as i had found some sapineus..well what i think to be sapineus....that also bruised quite black but did so with very little contact)...well i guess thats it for the brusing report lol

Certainly could be sapineus. There are loads of gyms, actually quite and extensive genus, some active, many not.

Lengthy response  Not sure I have the time to do it justice but first off I'd like to say thanks for at least doing a bit of research before posting and asking stupid questions

Your best bet still are gyms this time of year, however, given the warm temps you just might be able to find some active pans. Sure you can find them in horse fields or around barns but you're probably even more likely to find them in freshly sodded lawns. I have found three different active pans in that substrate. Panaeolus cinctulus, Panaeolus olivaceus and Panaeolus castaneifolius ... although disputed.

There are probably some active psilocybe species growing in your area as well and you can always keep your eye out for them but perhaps don't focus too much attention on them just yet - other than the Liberty Caps.. which may or may not be found in your area.

That's all I got for now... will try to address other points later.

Cheers

lol ive been doing some purposeful self isolation, meditation and awareness work as of late so dont mind my long winded speals and questions.....sometimes my balance between enjoying the journey to the find and simply being given the instructions to the find gets a little off kilter....
anyways checked out your thread, nice work on the estonian libs
ive got an eye for gyms now so dont really need to know anything else on them.....my feelings on libs in this area make we want to pursue this venture but being that my location is so far from any oceans, this creates a little block in my mind that my efforts could be fruitless (im a strong believer and practiser in the biology of belief so doubts arent really productive)....ill figure out a way to get around that block thogh
