Alabama's new anti-immigration laws are racist?
    #15153034 - 09/29/11 01:39 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

This is not about whether or not you agree with these new restrictions, but about how a law can be racist if it applies equally to ALL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS? Hispanic groups are going crazy and crying foul. It seems they are saying "We are the only foreign group that should be allowed to circumvent US immigration laws because we are, after all Norte Americanos and deserve special privileges."

Am I alone in seeing this irony?

Would especially like to hear from Hispanics.

Slippery slope to what? The USA has some of the most laxly enforced immigration laws in the world. Mexicans, who are bitching the loudest, have very strict immigration laws to keep out the riff-raff from El Salvador and Guatemala.

My mistake, I remember seeing armed Americans voluntarily patrolling the border with mexico, think it was in Bowling for Columbine but I'm not certain. I think the world would be a better place if all borders were dissolved.

Obviously the law isn't racist (if it indeed applies to all racial groups equally). Often when people say something like, "That law is racist", what they mean is, "The creation of the law has a racist motive".  In this case I would bet that whoever is calling this law racist is actually referring to the motive.

I was listening to an NPR interview this morning of an indignant undocumented immigrant (isn't that like calling a burglar an uninvited guest?) and the guy was making a case for the Alabama law being illegal on constitutional grounds.

I find it ironic that a person who is at that very moment breaking the law himself is simultaneously indignant at Alabama breaking the law. WTF? :what:

And nevermind that he claimed to have been here illegally for 11 years (thus somehow entitled to stay) but was speaking through an interpreter because he hadn't learned any English in all that time.

The one who should be indignant is me whose parents waited in lines at embassies and consulates, filled out endless papers, paid filing fees, immigration fees, documentation fees, procrastination fees, and assorted other fees, learned the freeking language, took citizenship classes, and FINALLY, after years of waiting their turn and following the rules, came here and became citizens.

Then some asshole jumps the fence and gets mad that anyone has the gall to tell him to leave.

GRRRR!! :crankey:

so basically your pissed because you think that everybody who crosses this invisible line should participate in some bureaucracy, pay a bunch of money to the state, and assimilate into the dominant culture before they can be respected. And if they don't then it's totally justifiable that they be locked up in for-profit prisons (whole families including children), sometimes with pregnant women giving birth in shackles...

not to mention that a lot of these "immigrants" are actually native americans who were on this continent long before white people showed up and decided everyone needed to be speaking english.

The law is racist because it primarly targets people of color in general. There not looking for canadians! The latest anti-immigrant fervor is just scapgoating during a time of economic crisis, like many fascist regimes have done in the past.

besides all that, the very conception of a "Nation" is racist at its very core and necessitates the maintenance of a constant militaristic occupation of claimed territory.

I agree. Anti car-jacking laws target blacks unfairly.

I read the law and saw no clause excusing Canadians. Perhaps you could point that out for me. Also show where all Canadians must be the same race. Thank you in advance.

With the advent of NAFTA, business has very open borders now which allows them to exploit situations on both sides for profit.  There is really no reason for companies to create jobs here which is what causes the problem, not Mexican immigrants.  Immigrants are the new scapegoat since now it is not PC to be racist anymore.

You're right. Let me rephrase that. They're not looking for WHITE Canadians.

to paraphrase Derrick Jensen: If you're going to close the borders to the flow of people, then you should also close them to the flow of resources and commodities.
